Sheet Set not opening with associated file

Anonymous
Not applicable

My sheet set does not automatically open when I open associated files (the SSM opens and is blank) . This is only happening with random files of the set, and all files in the set were created with the same version of AutoCAD from the same template file. My SSLOCATE and SSMAUTOOPEN are set to 1. When I navigate through the SSM and open the sheet set, it shows that the sheets are open, so the files are definitely associated. SSFOUND returns "" (read only).

Has anyone encountered this and is there a fix?

Thank you!

Yeah SSMAUTOOPEN is typically what I have experienced causes a file not to launch SSM (AutoCAD's Sheet Set Manager). As you said though, it's set to 1 (1 = Opens the Sheet Set Manager automatically)?

Question: Do you know if all the sheets in this sheet set where created using the 'new sheet' option; or were any sheets added through the 'import layout as sheet' option?  I have had the import layout as sheet option cause a sheet to require re-association to the dst before.

As a test, remove one sheet that is not auto-launching the SSM and then re-import it. Before you do, note down any field entries (properties) for that sheet as removing it will delete that data requiring you to re-type it all back in (for 'sheet' fielded attributes only, 'sheet set' fielded attributes retained in the overall dst as well as any default fields such as file name, etc.). If this solves the issue, it might be an issue where the affected sheets need to be re-associated to the sheet set.

Summary: I am thinking perhaps if some of the sheets in your sheet set were imported in (someone did a save-as on a sheet that was created using your SSM template then imported it into the SSM manually) vs. using the right-click --> New Sheet option for adding a new sheet set drawing.

I've had this happen occasionally as well. Most of my sheet sets are created after the drawings are set up, and added with the "Import Layout as Sheet" option. The sheet set will usually open with the drawings after a restart of AutoCAD for me.

Hi Chad,

I had created every sheet with the Import Layout as Sheet command...we do it this way because 1) we typically have multiple layouts/sheets within a single CAD file, and 2) the "new sheet" creates a new file in the same folder as the sheet set (our client prefers the CAD files to be in a separate folder). Is the "Import.." function just glitchy?

Thanks!

Afternoon Amy,

I have only seen this issue when using the 'import layout as sheet' option, however it shouldn't happen regardless. As an added note, you can right-click on a Subset (or right-click on the DST file and select New Subset) to specify 'which' folder you want the new drawings to be saved to (they don't need to reside in the same folder as the DST file). Corporately we do this to separate discipline groups (civil in one folder, process in another folder, electrical...., etc.).

We use multi-layout options here as well for some projects and also use the import layout as sheet workflow in those instances.

Did removing an affected sheet then re-importing back into the SSM (re-associating the sheet to the DST file) work? That has been a solution in the past that I have had success with. Let me know, always interested in anything SSM both good (or bad and how to fix it)!

Hi Chad,

No, unfortunately removing and re-importing doesn't work. That was one of the first things I tried. So frustrating! Good to know we can change where the files save, but that won't fix the multiple layout issue, and we do that quite often.

Another thing to try: Get another user in your office/company to open the same project on their workstation and see if the same issues are happening. This will tell us if it's an isolated issue (to your computer specifically i.e.: something corrupt) or it's something wrong with the sheet set itself.

If the same thing happens on another machine (same drawings, etc.) when we know it's a SSM issue or related to SSM. If it works on another machine correctly, then it's something related to your computer.

Curious, what version of AutoCAD are you using? Was this sheet set created on an earlier version of AutoCAD then you are currently using?

Same issue when my coworker tried opening the file from his computer.

Interesting point about the CAD version...the sheet files were created with 2018, but I believe the template DST file was created in an earlier version, maybe 2016. I'll try saving the DST file with 2018 and recreating the sheetset - there aren't many sheets and I'm early in the project so it won't be an issue!

Good to know it's not specific to a computer install/workstation but something "wrong" with the project's sheet set itself. Assuming other sheet sets are working correctly (or are all behaving like this - if they are it may be a sheet set template or template dst issue)?

Either way, sounds like your getting closer to the issue..... I have read a few forums posts about cross-version sheet sets acting up (mostly related to plotting issues though).

If you can post back an update once you re-create the DST/SSM that would be beneficial to others when searching the forums with a similar issue (and for me as well as I am curious about this one).

Sorry I couldn't be of any further assistance Amy, good luck and have a great rest of your day!

we have the same issue as well on Civil 3D 2017. we set "SSLocate" & "SSMAutopen" both to 1, however when we open some drawings in the sheetset, the SSM won't open automatically. If the SSM doesn't show up after the drawing open, the "SSFound" return "" , but if we manually open the associated sheetset, and issue "SSFound" command again, it will show the correct result.  any Suggestion? Thanks.

Interesting.... usually its either SSLOCATE or SSMAUTOOPEN that is not set to '1' - both should be for SSM to open automatically when an SSM-enabled drawing is opened/linked to an existing DST file.

This may be related to the version/creation date of the DST or the SSM files. I have read online that SSM files/templates originally created from older versions of AutoCAD 'can' occasionally create an functionality issue where something isn't working correctly. FYI - I have not experienced this directly myself.

However, I have had a couple DST files go bad (where something went wrong, perhaps corrupt, bloated, etc.). Generally we will rebuild the DST from scratch (slow, tedius) or completed the following:

  • Open AutoCAD and Open the effected DST within SSM
  • Go to Windows Explorer and locate the DST file
  • Cut/Paste the effected DST file to a backup location (or DELETE the DST outright)
  • You will notice the DST file magically returns (rebuilds automatically)
  • Return to AutoCAD, close/shutdown to save changes/write back to the DST
  • Restart AutoCAD and check SSM issues/functionality to see if they remain

Question: Does this SSM issue occur on all SSM projects opened in Civil 3D 2017? What about for other users (get another user within your office to open the SSM project/file and see if the same issue is replicated)?

  • If it's replicated it could be more of a global issue, requiring SSM templates/files to be updated to current version.
  • If the issues cannot be replicated, it could be a drawing issue/error, user profile or something related to an install problem/fix required, etc.

Keep me/us posted on what you identify in your testing. Good luck!!

I got the same issue that my sheet set got corrupted.

I followed the steps you mentioned, but it does not restore the sheet set I created.

Is it "corrupted" as the initial poster described or can't you open it at all from within Sheet Set Manager?

Yes, my one is corrupted.
Sheet set manager can open the sheet set, but any created folders, drawing or even the sheet set title does not appear there. When creating new subset in this corrupted sheet set is gets automatically a red question mark. For drawings appears the same symbol. When saving the drawing in the subset no error appears. Once I restart  AutoCAD and reopen the sheet set, it is blank again. Physical storage location is empty. Even the saved drawing, that are suppose to be there (according to the corrupted sheet set) aren't there.

My work around was:

- creating a new sheet set and import the drawings to it.

If you now or in the future want to, I can take a look at this if you email the DST to me.

zI just had something similar happen with sheets sets going back 6 years.  I am in windows 11 Civil3D 2022 and the sheet set opens but is blank.  The sheet set opens with information still showing in 2021 but not 2022.  In 2022 the customized variables are showing along with the number of sheets.  seems strange that works in 2021 but not 2022.
