I am taking a Navisworks file & exporting to an FBX file.

Then converting to a DXF file and I get a 3D file but it's tons of what appear to be individual surfaces.

This file ends up being huge in size.

Is there a way to end up with a solid?

That is a lot of conversion and before we start to analyse this workflow please let us know what the source of the NavisWorks project is.

NavisWorks is not a construction software, it does not create geometry, it only shows data from imported files. So which file-type was the one you imported, which software was used to create that data ... and there we will start (otherwise the first conversion <ThisSoftware> to NavisWorks has already destroyed some infos and we start with the first errors).

the original was PDMS.

I don't have PDMS:(  $$$$

I exported the file to a FBX.

Then I converted the FBX file with Autodesk FBX to DXF conversion pkg.

I used Autodesk plant 3D to import the dxf

Ok, I don't know PDMS ... which types of geometry can they export (I assume you have contact with the creator of that project files)?

Are you expecting to import the data as Plant3D object model? Then I guess you can't do that when FBX is part of the conversion process ... all object informations (besides of material and color) are lost in FBX

If you only need to display the geometry to do some connections/additions to the existing project why not using the NWC file to attach it to your dwg (command _COORDINATIONMODELATTACH) or create a 3D-DWF file from NavisWorks and attach it to your dwg (Sorry, DWF can only be attached as 2D DWF/DWFx)?

Unfortunately we can't get the owner of the PDMS model to export the model to neutral files for us:(

I am currently exporting isolated pieces of equipment to an FBX file then converting to a DXF.

The serious draw back is the file is in mesh style with thousands of entities.

And it's difficult to apply nodes to snap to on the items.

So I'll try  your idea & let you know how it turns out.
