Is it possible to keep the layer names after using viewbase?

Hello,

We are using Xerf for assembly the 3D model, and have the different layers name for the different objects. But after using the baseview command to generate the 2D drawings and "exportlayout", all layers disappeared and assign the new name "MD_Visible" and MD_Hidden". Xerf relationship also disappeared.

Is it possible to keep the original layers name after using the "baseview" command in AutoCAD 2014? or High version AutoCAD already solve these problems?

I will have to do some testing to determine if that is possible or not except after the fact, but I do not think so.

One of our clients has a really strict layer requirements. It is the time consuming to reassign the objects to the original layer names after every 3D model updating.

Could you please recommend some other methods if it is impossible by using the "Baseview" ? At least could seperate the referenced object with the different layers name.

Our client does have the standard check files available for the different disciplines. But the problem is 2D profile generated from "Baseview" and "Exportlayout" only have one layer "MD_Visible" for the solid line. So we have to seperate the objects manually and assign them to the correct layer name.

One of my colleagues had a suggestion that might help:

You may be able to use qselect to select the object(s) you want to perform the action on, verify that the qselect can identify the unique elements properly and then move them to a layer, then run the Action Recorder and go through all the steps.

He said it will probably work best at the command line, so I don’t know how useful this will be for you.

Thank you for your quick reply.

I just tried the "qselect" command. Since all objects are on the same properties ( same layers, same color, same linetype and etc), it only seperated all

objects as two types: line and arc.

Could you please send me 2 drawings? One with the objects on the layers the way you want them, and one with the objects on the incorrect layers.

It could be that you are stuck with separating the objects manually, but I will try to find you a workaround if I can.

Hi Steve,

I set up an assembly 3D model folder with three files referenced each other. Please see the attachment.

In HVAC 3D paper space, there is a 2D sheet set up already. Normally, in our work flow, we should exportlayout this 2D sheet to the model space. Once the file export, all reference link and layers disappeared, all 2D line became two layers.

After playing around with your drawings for a while, and making a basic drawing to test the issue, one of my colleagues asked me if it was necessary for you to use Viewbase at all?

You should just be able to use a Section from the drawing with the Xrefs in it, then Exportlayout, and there shouldn't be any changes to the layers.

Do you think that will work?

The other thing I wanted to mention was that even after using the Viewbase, then using Exportlayout, the only difference I could see in the layernames for my experiment with one xref'd simple drawing is the

"Test from scratch-CUBE|3D CUBE" xref layer was changed to  

"Test from scratch-CUBE$0$3D cube" in the layout exported, which is as designed.

None of the other layers were changed at all.

You should be able to change any layer names using the LAYTRANS command, with the exception that you cannot use the pipe character ( | from the xref) in the substitution for some reason.

We tried this way, but after Explortlayout, everything are still 3D in the model space. Our client want the 2D drawing.
