Maybe a wrong scale factor?
A sample dwg would be helpful for us to find the cause.

Click on your hatch, then in properties palette, change the scale of the hatch. Change it to something small, e.g. 0.1 or 0.01. Or change to a large value, e.g. 100 or 1000.

I guess he/she must use other "tricks" (e.g. qselect), but without an example drawing it's hard to give a good tip.

you may need to check your layers status , try to turn ON ( LAYON ) and / or thaw all layers ( LAYTHW ) and see if any changes .
