File Tabs missing after clean screen

Anonymous

I have tried everything to get my open files tab back.  When I open  two or more files on my laptop (Autocad 2014) I have the multiple files open tab, and I can turn it off and on with either the ribbon button or the command line filetab/ filetabclose, but after using the clean screen option to better see a drawing then going back to normal viewing area the file tabs disappear, and neither ribbon or command line will bring it back. But after closing both drawings and reopenning them the file tabs are there until I use the clean screen command then click it again and file tabs are missing. I have tried multiple files so I know it is not a file issue. And now I have found that if I switch workspaces from one and back to mine they return, but after reopening drawings they are gone again. Is there a global system setting that needs to be changed?

I cannot replicate your problem. Command Filetab will bring back the tabs even on Fullscreen mode.

I know it's weird , it started when I reinstalled Autocad and had the problem of Cad opening a new instance of Cad for every new drawing, once I fixed that the problem started.

I have the exact same problem as the original poster describes- as does another CAD user in my office. Any new insights?

"Command FILETAB will bring back the tabs even on Fullscreen mode": does that not work?

using the FILETAB command doesn't work unfortunately. I tried to google the problem before posting a comment and found this command but nothing seemed to work for myself or my colleague. Because we are both having this issue I'm partial to suspect our local network since that would be the only commonality between our computers, however I'm hesitant to blame a display glitch on a network problem; I can't really see how they could be connected.

Here is something interesting though: using the FILETAB command will toggle the "Display file tab" check-box on the Display tab of the options dialogue, but the tabs themselves will not appear and disappear on my screen with respect to the state of the check-box.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

SDI = 0 or 1?

SDI = 0

...What does this variable control?

Single Drawing Interface.
0: multiple drawings per session
1: single drawing per session

Filetab only works when SDI = 0. Have you tried the Filetab from the Ribbon again?

No, I havent been able to find an answer. I usually just have to close and reopen the drawing.

Dear All,

I have the same problem in AutoCAD 2016 (sp1)   easy to reproduce.

  1. Start AutoCAD (default profile)
  2. Make sure File tabs are visible
  3. Presss clean screen  (bottom Right of screen)
  4. Press cleas sreen again to restore "normal" menu.  Then the file tabs are gone  (model and layout tabs also for that matter)
  5. Filetab command or ribbon "view" => "file tabs" has no effect.

SDI has no effect.

Kind regards,

Alain

And my laptop running 2016 is still doing it as of yesterday. I cannot reproduce it on my desktop version, but on my laptop it happens everytime I use the clean screen to gain more space. And then when I return to normal screen the file tabs are missing. I have tried the ribbon button and the options menu as well as changing the SD value. Has anyone else besides us experienced this, and if so what is the solution?

Hi @Anonymous I have seen exactly this error in the middle of a training course I am currently running; when I use clean screen to show the trainees an enlarged drawing area, I cannot then use Filetab or any of the other settings mentioned previously in this thread to restore them.

The only option for me is to close and reopen AutoCAD and then they return as normal.

This is on a freshly installed copy of Windows 10, complete with a freshly installed default install of AutocAD 2016 and with the latest Service pack 1 installed.

Any thoughts/help would be greatly received.

According to HELP the command CLEANSCREENON does "...The screen displays only the menu bar, the Model and layout tabs at the bottom of the drawing, the status bars, and the command line."

CLEANSCREENOFF command (or the statusbar button, or CTRL+0) ought to get you back into 'standard' screen. Does it not, instead of closing AutoCAD?

It may require a new patch from Autodesk if missing, FILETAB is being reported as troublesome earlier in the same thread.

No the file tab s do not come back after returning to the normal screen. It is still happening on my laptop only, and not on any of my other servers that have 2016 installed. And all current service packs have been installed. I am a Cad manager and I have exhausted all fixes reinstalls, repairs etc.. And no one from Autodesk has an answer. I just wish Autocad didn't have so many problems, bugs and crashes with every release. Oh well

Hi Al,

Just tested it again on AutoCAD 2016 with the latest hotfix 3. The problem is still there.

I also test AutoCAD 2017 on the same machine In that version the problem is solved.  Seems strange to me for AutoDesk to Fix it in the 2017 version but not in a Hotfix for 2016 that's from a later release date.

Cheers,

Alain
