File Tabs missing after clean screen

Anonymous
Not applicable

I have tried everything to get my open files tab back.  When I open  two or more files on my laptop (Autocad 2014) I have the multiple files open tab, and I can turn it off and on with either the ribbon button or the command line filetab/ filetabclose, but after using the clean screen option to better see a drawing then going back to normal viewing area the file tabs disappear, and neither ribbon or command line will bring it back. But after closing both drawings and reopenning them the file tabs are there until I use the clean screen command then click it again and file tabs are missing. I have tried multiple files so I know it is not a file issue. And now I have found that if I switch workspaces from one and back to mine they return, but after reopening drawings they are gone again. Is there a global system setting that needs to be changed?

Yeah that always happens to me on my laptop only. I have to close Autocad and restart to get the file tabs back. What version are you running, and what type of system/computer are you using? Maybe there is something about the computer we are using, because it doesn't happen on my PC at home or at work, only on my laptop. I have a Dell M6800, it is pretty powerful, so I wouldn't expect this to happen. Let me know if you ever find an answer. I posted this problem over a year ago, and still no one can find an answer, even the top Autodesk people have no idea.

Thanks for the info., I am about to upgrade to 2017 and hopefully won't ever see this problem again. I guess if not enough people see this issue then Autodesk doesn't really care. I pay too much for my subscriptions to have annoying little bugs, but oh well what can you do. Thanks again, and let us know if you see this come up in 2017.

Yeah it makes no sense. I know it's only a small issue, but when working remotely it is good to have all of the screen real estate I can have. Not to sound negative, because there is nothing out there that competes with Autocad, but you would think that by this release they wouldn't have so many kinks and bugs. I have an issue with my work PC that crashes quite a lot with just plain 2D drawings.

No, I havent been able to find an answer. I usually just have to close and reopen the drawing.

I can confirm the same issue exists using C3D 2015 SP3. Closing and reopening the drawing seems to be the only way to get the tabs back. Thanks to AlexFielder for providing a solutoin to the problem.

Hi neo5869,

It appears that you have been suffering through this issue for a while.

It appears that you are running AutoCAD 2016 and I assume that you have applied Service Pack 1.

As I understand it, this problem started after you performed a clean screen. After that you no longer have your file tabs available. I assume the rest of your menu ribbon is still intact.

Does this condition still exist if you Reset settings to Default?

Does this condition still exist if you logon to your workstation as a new user (with administrator permissions)?

Nope it did not help. It is on my laptop and I am the administrator. This is not a huge issue, but probably the most irritating one because AI use clean screen a lot on my laptop to get more screen space when I am working remotely. I have tried everything and still file tabs will not come up until I close Autocad and restart it. Pretty frustrating , but oh well, we are used to the Autocad bugs by now.

Hi @Anonymous,

Even though your current logon has admin permissions, a new logon will create a new profile that might not have the issue.

Ok, that makes sense. I will try that as soon as I am done with work today and get back to you. If that does change things then what would that mean about my profile I currently have? Thanks again for your assistance.

I am hoping that works for you. If it does, that means that something in your current profile is damaged or that one of your customizations might be causing the issue.

Let's see how it goes with the new logon and we can plan another attack on the problem. 🙂

I have had the same issue.  The main problem is in my mental mixing of AutoCAD and Adobe.  CTRL+0 in Adobe zooms to full screen.

I did that last weekend and then lost my tabs.  Not only the file tabs at the top of the drawing window but also the layout tabs at the bottom of the window.

Filetab open or close wouldn't bring them back.

I just solved the issue though it seems like I caused another.

I ran the menu command and picked acad.cuix.  That brought the tabs back!  Yes!  Both sets even.

However, now I can't toggle them on or off in the View > Interface (panel) > File Tabs button.

Partial solution, but better than where I was.  Maybe later I'll have time to see if a different .cuix file is the answer.

Sorry I haven't updated this, but no nothing has fixed my problem, but it still happens only on my laptop. I have just given up since Autocad is always so buggy, and I just don't use clean screen on my laptop. Oh well....

I just want to apologize for not responding on your solutions to try sooner, I am super busy at work and finally had a chance to get back to this. I went back through all of your responses so I could try them all, and FINALLY it worked. It was the profile that I was using on my laptop, it must have been corrupt, I switched to another profile in my profile list and the problem is gone, I just exported my work profile to my laptop and all is fine. Hopefully the problem won't come back. Is there a reason why a profile can become corrupt? Thanks again for all of your assistance and patience.

Well I finally found my problem with the clean screen thing. It was my profile on my laptop that was somehow corrupt. After switching profiles under options/ profiles the problem went away, so I was able to export my profile from work and import it to my laptop and all is normal now.

Hi @Anonymous,

Another way to get them to reappear is to switch workspaces. This is what I use myself.

I tried that but it didn't work. Since my profile was corrupt, nothing worked. But thanks

One of my users has this issue, and I was hoping the item marked as solution would be better than "your profile or customization is corrupt, start over".

That is not a solution, and is not even a reliable conclusion.

The mostly likely candidate is the CUI system has a bug, and is either misreading the cui/profile settings, or ignoring them.

I say that because anyone who has dealt heavily with menus, palettes, profiles and ribbon ever since release 2006 when CUI came out, know Autodesk does not have their act together on it.

Workspace switching is the most buggy, with lousy consequences as it closes all open toolbars and how do you get that back easily without a previous profile export?

I'm not saying John must pull an answer out of a hat like some trick, just that saying to reset your profile is drastic to most users, and a sign of a bug to an experienced troubleshooter, not a corrupt profile. Autodesk needs to do their part on this and test some and reply, not just watch and call that support.
