That's what happens when you pick a point in open space with no command active.  It assumes you are selecting things in noun-verb operation with a window of some kind.  If this is only first thing  in any drawing, and if you are not  picking yourself, something must be triggering the equivalent of a mouse pick when you open a drawing.  It's possible you just have a faulty mouse that's sending out a pick signal unintended somehow -- try a different one.

Hello everyone, I had the same problem you all described. In addition my zoom/pan felt different too ... . However in others files all worked just fine.
Then I checked the ViewCube -> RightClick : In someway it was set to perspective. I changed to parralel as in my other files. All back to normal :).
Hope it works for you guys.

it is because you have another overlapping or empty viewport, simply delete those extra viewports to fix your issue.

So what changed with your PC or software in the last week?
Did your restart your PC yet?

Is your AutoCAD fully updated? We will need to see proof, a screenshot of your ABOUT command is a good place to start.
