AutoCAD 2016 crash

My crash was a total hang up during switching from "model" to "Layout".  All other applications worked but the only way I could unfreeze AutoCAD was to logoff and reload.  In the past I have been able to find an autosaved file or a recover file.  This time I couldn't find a receover file nor any recent auto-saved file - despite I have an auto-saved every 10 minutes..  The only file that seems to be what I'm looking for is an "UNDO.ac$" of size similar to the file I lost!  But a simple name change didn't work this time.  Have I lost all today's work or is there some way to unlock the "UNDO" file and revert it to a "dwg" file?

Thanks

Open WIndows Notepad, drop the ac$ file into it: is the first word at the top something like AC1027 or similar digits? If not, it's not a valid DWG file.

IMHO you should restart your PC (resets OS), not just log out and back in which does little to reset much.

Thank you.

There were several AC files but they had 0 size.  The only one of size was called "UNDO".  When I tried to open the ac$ files all gave , "not valid file" message.    What was strange about the whole hangup was that despite I have 10 min interval auto-saves there were no saved or backed up files ... ie no restore filed available.

I simply logged out because that usually is enough to free up applications.

Also by re-stating computer I noticed all the ac$ files I did have were obliterated ...

In the end I re-did my work manually.
