3D drawing to laser cut machine

Hi everyone!

I struggle when I want to laser cut a 3D drawing out of one plastic sheet. For example I want to laser cut a chair with a seat surface and a back surface. When I want to laser cut this chair I can not only use the sizes of the two surface because I have to take the radius of the corner into account as well. Is there a fast way to do this in Autocad?

hope someone can help!

Hi @Anonymous,

I see that you are visiting as a new member to the AutoCAD forum. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

Flattened 3D shapes can be complicated to work with. AutoCAD does not have a specific functionality for flattening complex objects, so curves like you describe generally would need to be accounted for manually.

You may find that the sheet metal functions in Inventor or Fusion 360 work well for this. They are able to calculate for radius' or bends. See this link for more information:

Autodesk Sheet Metal Software

Please let me know if this helps.

What you're looking for is usually referred to as 'unfolding', rather than 'flattening' (projecting a 3D profile onto a plane as 2D geometry).  AutoCAD can do the latter but not the former.

Hi,

Thirst of all, thanks for answering me!

I now have perhaps a more simple problem… When a costumer sends me an Autocad drawing of 3D, I want to convert that drawing into a 2D front view and a 2D top view. Is there a way in Autocad 2019 to do this fast? On YouTube there are only videos of older versions (2014 i.e.).

So how can I fix this in autocad 2019?

Thanks for helping me!

Hi,

You can use FLATSHOT to convert a 3D object to 2D object.

Here is how you can do that:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlS5rgVKjz8

Hi,

Clarification of the problem, with a picture of how the customer sends the order. this product must be able to fit into the laser cutter, i.e. I need a 2D front view and a 2D top view. How can I do this easily in Autocad LT 2019 without having to re-draw it all over myself? I have tried to do things with view but nothing seems to work...

Please help me!

The customer has drawn a 3D drawing in a 2D file, so there is no z-axis only an x and y axis

Aah, I see it now. Its a Isometric drawing.

Sorry, there is no shortcut to getting the front view and other views. You need to manually draw it by yourself.
