Why do Curves/circles keep turning to polygons?

I've noticed when drafting my curves/circles keep changing to polygons, why is this? (see attached image)

So when you LIST it, it says it's a polygon? Or is this just a display issue, your screen in not refreshing fast enough... .

I think its the screen. It'll be ok for a few hours then all of a sudden it changes to this. If I close and reopen the document its fine again.

Typing regen/refresh resets the drawing btw. Can I change settings to solve this?

Yes, of course.

Do you know about VIEWRES command?

Just type at the command prompt VIEWRES, hit Return twice, then type 20000 and hit Return again.

Now arcs and circles would be represented as arcs and circles every time (almost every time) in current drawing.

The VIEWRES setting is saved in the drawing. To change the default for new drawings, consider specifying the VIEWRES setting in the template files on which you base your new drawings

I'm new to autoCAD (been a vectorworks user for 3 years) so I haven't figured out all of the commands yet. I'll try the viewres command, Thanks 🙂

At the time of AutoCAD r.12 for DOS the default setting for viewres was 100, then Autodesk changed it to 1000, but the maximum setting is 20000, so with 20000 you can zoom into drawing deep enough to retain "right" representation for arcs.

Have to say, that the setting for viewres doesn't affect curve segments when you plotting (printing) drawing - even with 5 your arcs will be printed as arcs.

Great! It worked. Thanks so much. I thought this was going to be a Mac vs PC issue, as we use PC in class and I use Mac at home.

how about 3D design. I designed a 3D elbow in autocad 2017 ver, after rendering it shows circle as polygon.

Welcome to Autodesk Forums!

Hi Ashfaq,

Try to increase the value of FACETRES system variable:

http://help.autodesk.com/view/ACDMAC/2017/ENU/?guid=GUID-2DF46705-EE9E-409F-86B5-ED391CE207DC

If you set it to 3 or 4, you will get acceptable results. Maximum value is 10, but this will slow down rendering process.

if this happens when you close and open the drawing, type REGEN in command bar and press enter. That way you will be able to re-circle oplygoned circles

I am going through the same above problem. So i changed the VIEWRES setting to 20000.the problem is solved in autocad...but when i save pdf, the arcs are not smooth in pdf, they are changing to polygons again. So the intersections are also not proper.

Welcome to Autodesk Forums!

Hi Praj,

Which AutoCAD version do you use?
If you are using 2018 version: have you tried predefined High Quality PDF plotter?
Can you share an example of PDF output?

I use AutoCad 2013 version. I am attaching an image where you can see the
wall lines and window lines are away from the arcs. But in Autocad drawing,
they are properly attacahed.

In AutoCAD 2013 you can only to try to use the trick, I described here:

The best solution for if curve line showing as a straight line is REGEN (Command) type "re" and enter the drawing fix is at it is.
