Add custom railing base plates to style in AutoCAD Architecture or MEP

Is it possible to add a base plates to a railing?

I don't see any Standard MEP Railings using Base plates, or an option to add these to custom Railing Styles.

Has anyone found a work around for this?

I realise railings are more of an architectural feature, so maybe this que should be in Architectural forum? Its probably the same concept in both packages?

Hi @Anonymous,

I've moved your post over to the AutoCAD Architecture forum, since the users here are more likely to be familiar with railing customization than those in the AutoCAD MEP forum.

I'd recommend looking at custom blocks for railing styles to start with:

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately I have not been able to use the links provided to add base plates to railings.

Are you looking for something like this?2018-10-10_ACA2017_PipeRailWithPostBasePlate.png

If so, the attached file, done in 2013 format, has the Railing Style that generated that.  It is done with a custom display block.  I only added one to the Model Display Representation in the sample file.

Hi David,

Yes this is exactly what I am after, but even with the cad file, I cant figure out how you done this? If you could explain that would be great so could start to expand upon this one for different types of base plates.

I have another thread where I was looking to add spikes onto the top of the vertical posts. Perhaps this is done using the same method also?

Thanks,

Joe

David,

Thanks again for your reply regarding the railing base plates.

I would really appreciate it if you could advise on how these base plates were added to the railing, so I can develop this and use to create my own different types in future, e.g. side fix, base fix etc.

Thanks,

Joe

@Anonymous

My apologies for the slow reply for more detail.  I decided that this was "worthy" of documentation as a blog article; you can find a more-in-depth description of how to do what I did in this article.

I have also attached a "revised" version of the example drawing file (still in 2013 file format).  It is not substantially different from the previous article.  It does have a direct instance of the Mass Element used for the base plate (not in a Block Definition) centered at [0,0], and the Block Definition instance is offset to [0,10'-0"].  There is also a polyline and a line at [0,20'-0"] that are not part of the linked article, but which will come into play in a future article discussion the addition of a Custom Profile Display for a "plan" Display Representation that I hope to publish early next week.

The post on adding a Custom Profile for a plan representation of a base plate at posts can be found ....  The attached drawing file, done in 2013 file format, represents the end state of the previously posted file, after going through the addition of a Custom Profile.  As noted in the article, I doubt I would actually do this in a project, due to the question of whether the graphics would be readable at typical plan scales and a lack of control over the graphics.

David,

Thanks again, awesome work.

I would never have figured this out myself.

I have actually used your methods to solve another query I had, "adding Railing spikes"

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-mep-forum/railing-spikes-palisde-fence/m-p/8319276/highlight/...

I have referenced your work in this article but was unsure how to tag you in the post, (if that is possible)

Many thanks

joe
