This is probably one of the biggest selling points of Projectwise. Granted Projectwise is horrible when it comes to Revit, Inventor, Studio Max, etc., but it is far superior when it comes to dealing with Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, etc. Mainly when we are talking about reference files.
When a reference is broken in Projectwise you have a dependency viewer that lets you correct reference mapping externally from the drawings. Believe it or not you can even do this with Revit, although it's hit and miss.
Why Autodesk has not added something like this is beyond me. Projectwise has had it for a very long time. I think over 10 years.
Right now in order to do this you need custom api programming and dynamo scripts to do something that should be available out of the box.
At least add it to something like the Replication Tool.
