You should not have any proplem useing jpeg as material maps:

Try this:

1) draw a simple box

2) assign a multi sub object material

3) select material number 1 (ID 1) and assign std material

3) under maps or diffuse - assign a bitmap and then select the material map (jpeg) to the diffuse channel.

assign this to the box and it should show up as a sub-material.
