According to the documentation, you cannot change the Color Map checkbox, but you can manipulate the curve. Look at TexOutputClass : Material in the MAXScript documentation.
sometimes its hard for non scripters to find the right place in the docu. So if its not possible to enable the checkbox, then I think I have to think about something else.
