I used the polygon sub object select 'by angle' all the time, but I think in 2018 this 'feature' came into play.

It doesn't select the polygon group you've clicked on. It also selects polygons that aren't part of the element, behind it. It can even have it's normals flipped, so if you happen to select these, and then delete them, and then later you rotate round and realise you have also deleted polys -behind- the polys - this is a pain in the ass.

Was this brought in, or is this a bug? I guess it's a bug.

BLUE is the ones I want to select

RED are the ones I don't want to select

Does anyone get this? Is it a recent addition or a bug, it never used to do this.

@jibijib

I have noticed similar strange behavior.  For example with the object below, in theory it should be possible to select the highlighted polygons by angle with the angle set to 45 degrees.  But I have found that you also have to have "Ignore backfacing" to be checked.   Try checking Ignore backfacing and lowering the angle setting to see if you can get your desired selection.

Never work on base object!

Apply Edit Poly and work with that ( or some other suitable modifier)

Also, don't know the point of collapsing everything, all time.

But know many reasons why not to...

Why should we never work on a base object. Have been doing it this way for 20 years and not seen anything bad happen, would be interested to hear why.

Also, the ignore backface doesn't work - believe me I've tried. I do wonder how these things get past QA. It isn't doing what is expected, or what it has been doing for the past 15 or so ways. Definitely a bug.
