Be able to detach a viewport to it's own floating window. Optionally maximize that viewport. This would allow you to use a second monitor just for a single viewport, this would be most awesome.
Any news on that? A detachable viewport will be good for sooo many things! Also as an option a way that viewport is FULL screen without any additional border or information on the viewport or gyzmos, and that this is an instance viewport from any other viewport. This way we can have this maximize clean viewport on a separate screen totally clean while we manipulate view/objects on our main viewport. Useful to show any project to clients, or to have it on a projector adjusting 3d elements for mappings, with exactly the same output size as our final render, etc....
Another very usefull thing to have would be to filter categories per viewport. Very usefull for the animator! This way you can hide shapes, bones, helpers and other things except the geometry and have a clear view on your animated object.
3ds Max is capable of running just fine on a 4K monitor. I do it every day. There's a few things that don't scale well, but in the case of viewports, this isn't an issue.
How about being able to open different .max-files in newly created viewports. Every viewport could have it`s own File-Menue where you can load a different .max file and of course being able to drag-n-drops objects between those files/viewports.
I think this would be a real game-changer for 3dsmax.
I haven't seen much in this field since it was suggested and we are now on 3DS Max 2019 with not many usability fixes or implementations, one of the biggest downsides currently using this software over others I have to say amongst other things is the inability to tear off the viewport. Giving users the ability to work over multiple monitors is almost an expectation with all current 3D software. Maya can do it, Modo can do it, Blender can do it, XSI could do it and more.
In every work setting I've been in, working on multiple monitors is expected, and within different disciplines it can become something that without the feature, makes working extremely difficult.
One example of this would be an animator, using a the cross viewport with 3 views active, one camera being the perspective camera (for selecting control curves) The other being a render camera (for seeing the current framing) and the third being a dopesheet or curve editor (obviously you can move this to another monitor).
Working with all this on one screen, becomes entirely overcrowded and obtuse to use without really being able to see what you are doing.
With multiple monitor support and window tearing you could have a render cam on one full screen, the perspective on another and the dope on another, making the full use of the application much more usable. This has been something I've honestly been waiting for since way back using 3DS Max 8 and we still haven't really seen any changes that support multi window use of the application.
An example of how this would look using Maya.
I would very much like for Autodesk to add this support and not let it rot away in the 'great ideas, but not something new' mindset. Just because it's not new, doesn't mean it isn't very much appreciated.
i hope this wouldnt be the only new feature coming with a subsequent release. its embarrassing we havent had this yet, so it shouldnt be a celebrated implementation. Having this and two more most requested features would be solid.
Hey @Anonymous! Thanks for bringing this up again. Unfortunately, we can't say when a feature will be in a future release. Fortunately, you can apply to join the feedback community here and you might be able to get your answer. 🙂
Hi everyone! We're very happy to announce that this idea has now been implemented and is available in 3ds Max 2020.1 Update. Keep an eye out on your Autodesk Desktop App or your account portal via manage.autodesk.com for a download link. This is currently the top voted idea on this forum, thank you all for making your wishes clear and taking the time to vote and participate in the discussion.
