Viewport Item Centering/Tracking

Viewport Item Centering/Tracking

Max needs the ability to track animated items in non-camera viewport(s)

Lightwave 3D has had this feature for many years. There is a button in the corner of each viewport that looks like a target. This is a toggle for a command called 'center current item.' As long as this toggle is enabled, the viewport will automatically recenter and track the currently selected item based on it's pivot point.  This is extremely helpful when trying to analyze and or troubleshoot animation of fast moving items, just for quickly locating an item that might be lost in viewport limbo.
We should not have to create and constrain a camera to make this happen. One click to enable, and then from item to item to retarget the view.

This is my old take at this problem :

Download script

- you run the script, it will dock a new tool on top bar. then you select an object, and check the button. It will lock the current viewport to the object. if you want to modify the view, uncheck the button, move your viewport, and check again. You can lock to a vertex too if you check the vert checkbox and select a vertex.

You will notice that often the viewport refresh before the view aligns, because it relies on the viewportredrawcallback I guess transforming the view during the refresh itself can't really happen at the same time. That's why a native solution would definitely be better.

Why only non-camera viewports? With the 2d-pan mode it could be useful to track objects the same way.
