How can I change UI of 3DS max 2017 to look like 2014?

I've tried unsucessfully to change the UI scheme of 2017 to resemble something I'm used to working in. Posted are screen shots from 2014 & 2017. Is this as close as I can hope to get? Exporting & importing UI theme did not seem to work. Thank you for any insight.

I've been following this thread for ages and agree with much said in it.

What's annoying is that I can't vote using this account as:

"The AREA login has now switched to the Autodesk single sign on, in order to let you login to all Autodesk web sites with one single account.

Hello @Anonymous,

This happened to me too.  When the single sign on rolled out, I pressed "ask me later" which I guess hid the window from me for future changes.  (I guess I could clear my cookies but I didn't want to.)  Then I logged into the page from another machine it all got sorted out and works on all machines.  So, maybe just try logging in from another machine and it should work out.  I had the same experience as you, and I think it was related to delaying the single sign on merge / account picker.

i like the big viewport performance increase in max 2017, i think its time to leave 2015 behind

That is certainly one aspect where the devs deserve a lot of credit and kudos.

Hello @mitviz,

I'm enjoying it too, plus the ability to unwrap high poly objects much faster.  I'll be supporting 2015 until 2019 however, as the forum support specialists do support for current version minus 3.  So right now, it's 2017 to 2014.

they need to however fully reinstate the old icons and look, the new icons are really awful and so confusing, after using it a whole day its like the little blues and colors don't fit anywhere, why don't they ever have a people's choice voting for such designs, ask the people what they want, come up with a few designs and have us vote on it, this 2017 look is a total letdown, i have not met one person who i know who likes it

Hello @mitviz,

A few posts up I have a Feature Request asking for the ability to make those changes a bit easier in the future for users, please vote on it!   My feeling is it's not possible to please everyone all of the time, but creating a system so it's easier to replace icons is a solution that everyone can benefit from.  Hopefully that can work, or I have posted on page 1 or 2 the icons for max 2016 you can use in 2017.  (Minus the command panel, which is locked right now.)

This is my gift for peoples who loves older version of icons.

I prepared my favourite set of icons for Light UI scheme, see attachment. Unzip it in folder ...\3ds max 2017\UI_LN\Icons\...

It is not finished yet. I would like to prepare icons for Material Editor, Track View and UnwrapUVW modifier, but I don't know when it will possible. Some icon are from max resources folders (thanks kris), but many of icons are extracted with Corel and edited manualy (size, alpha). It tooks time.

To assure cohesion I modified Bind To Space Warp icon.

Yellow colour for Pressed Buttons in Customize User Interface -> Colors is R:238 G:204 B:85

First thing:

I have problem to determin of icons paths in Scene Explorer window.

This procedure doesn't work for this window.

The second thing:

With Workspace : Default it works, but I have problem with Default with Enhanced Menus. Some icons disappear:

Hello @Anonymous,

Beautiful!  Very nice work here!  There's a few people I need to ask about this problem you've mentioned, and I know one of them is still out on vacation.  I will ask him when he gets back in.  Nice work!

Best Regards,

@AnonymousGreat job, thanks! Please can you tell how adapt icons to dark sheme?

To adapt icons to dark theme you can try with negative conversion with dark icons like Undo or Redo. For colorful icons it will more complicated. In dark theme only black outline should change to bright colour. In XnView there is Batch Processing with Transformation Replace color but in my opinion it will not well for all cases. You should use software like Gimp, Corel or Photoshop with more advanced Replace colour function (I mean range of colors, more than one colour at a time, beacause of gradients).

After conversion just create folder Dark here ...\3ds max 2017\UI_LN\Icons\...

Good luck.

I agree. That is why i wrote, that it is for light theme. Preparing icons for dark scheme from original icons is more difficult and time consuming. Look, for example:Move Dark Theme Corected.png

Original Move icon gives small imperfections, after manual correction icon look better, but in my opinion is still illegible because of blue pixels.

Solution is changing other pixels to black. Let's try:

Move Dark Theme 3 Cases.png

Better? Yes. But think about more complicated icons with more gradients. With so huge amount of icons in 3ds max it will ... hmm ... time consuming 😉

I prefer light theme and that is why i think that my job is possible to do.

Autodesk gave us great solution and I think that this is big step. I'm sure that for dark theme someone will prepare better icons soon.

I have to get back to work. In this moment I have finished icons for Mini Curve Editor:

Mini Curve Editor.png

As always unzip it here ...\3ds max 2017\UI_LN\Icons\...
