Just adding my voice to this thread. Like many others we use Nvidia cards and fully patched Max 2017 and Windows 10

Windows version: Windows 10 Pro v1607 OS Build 14393.576

3ds Max and Service Pack version:   2017 with SP3 and 2017.0.1 Security Fix

Graphics card:  Nvidia Quadro K2200

Current Nvidia driver version: 376.33

It's driving me nuts! The crash always happens when scrubbing the timeline in an animation, and it's happened at least 6 times in the last 2 days, including during a client meeting (embarrassing). Everything is the absolute latest driver and version. I even did a complete uninstall of my Nvidia drivers using this tool: http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

Because the crash is a total machine lock-up, it's not possible to send the Autodesk crash report, so I would guess the problem is more widespread than you may realise.

Any news on progress to fix this error would be gratefully received.

Hello @jacek.jerzy.maj and @billnuttall,

I am collecting all the info in this thread and passing it up the chain.  That's all I can do right now while this is investigated, but the more info in this thread the better.  I have a team meeting today where I will bring this up again.

Thank-you, appreciate the feedback! For now I'm using the Direct 3D 9 option, which unfortunately is missing lots of nice stuff, and doesn't let you save a shift-V animation as quicktime 😞

On the plus side, no more crashes.

Thanks for the information @billnuttall,

Apple has discontinued development of Quicktime for Windows, so moving forward this will become a bigger problem.  It might be worth looking into another codec for video.  Some users are using the Lagarith codec which seems to be working pretty well. Thread here about that.

In the meanwhile I do think using DX9 is the best option if you are experiencing problems with DX11.

Yes, I did try the 'Nitrous Direct3D 9' before having to switch to 'Legacy Direct3D', as it caused a different kind of problem entirely (most likely unrelated); my slate material editor was taking forever to update materials, and slowing down everything in max. Strangely enough we use V-Ray, which also handles material rendering in the slate editor, so I have no idea why that happened. Switching to 'Legacy Direct3D' immediately changed the slate editor responsiveness back to how it was under 'Nitrous Direct3D 11'. Bizarre.

Anyway, in the future, my suggestion would be for Autodesk to look at incorporating a 4K-ready open source codec into max, which right now means VP9 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VP9 . As good as H265 is, I would assume there would be royalty issues.

I'm experiencing the same problem as other describe. Frozen viewports with a last chance to save, if you click once to many 3ds max completely freezes without a chance of saving or recuperating the file.

The errors happen when I move the view in shaded mode, or when changing to shaded.

I have an up to date MSI GTX 970

Running fully updates windows 10

Hello @billnuttall,

I would suggest putting up a feature request if you want a specific codec.  It's often better than waiting.

Thank you for the information @Anonymous, I appreciate it.

Windows version: Windows 10 Pro v10.0.14393 OS Build 14393

3ds Max and Service Pack version:   2017 with SP3 and 2017.0.1 Security Fix

Graphics card:  Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti

Current Nvidia driver version: 376.33

viewport crashes but menus seem to work, can save, followed by 3ds max crashing or freezing completly, no crash log.  Occasionally the viewport freezes goes black then reverts back to working viewport.  If viewport freezes and i click on something twice, then max will freeze completly.

Thank you for the information @Anonymous.

@everyone,

I have been working with Jon Bell to escalate this internally, so thank you for posting your information in here, it's very helpful.  If any other users come across this thread, please post whatever details you can.  Thank you all very much.  (Also I'd love confirmation that this affects any ATI cards, so far none are listed.)

I'm adding my bit to it, since it started happening I've updated drivers 4 times and there is no change. Direct X 11 viewport is still crashing and freezing in random moments. It works better when not in HighQuality mode but if I use realistic materials and add environment reflections to them its like a moment to crash or freeze the last frame. When I reset display drivers with CTR-SHIFT-WIN-B the viewport stays black so like Max doesn't refresh it even if driver is reloaded. It does before the freeze when I reload the driver while max is functional so I think this is the DX11 viewport problem rather graphic card or windows.

DX 11 works flawlessly on one of my machine that didn't have SP3 update to max so maybe there are some changes that were done in that patch that could be traced?

cheers

Hello @Anonymous,

Thanks for the information.  I have posted a link to this thread in the relevant bug tracker cases so all this information is being logged for the issue.  The more info the better, and this is a helpful post.  Thank you.  I'm not sure if SP3 was part of the issue, but I have forwarded this information along.

Just got a new clean system at work and still experiencing the same issue.

Before, I thought it might be from running on a MacBook in BootCamp issue but having the same issue on a maxed out PC.

New system info: HP Z440

Windows version: Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB 64bit

3ds Max and Service Pack version: 2017 - Most current as of today Product version 19.0 SF commercial

Graphics card:  NVIDIA Quadro M5000

Current NVDIA driver version: 21.21.13.7295

Typically just doing some simple product model rendering or animations. Models are imported from Autocad or Revit.

Had this issue three times already on this clean system. Saved file, closed 3ds and reopened to fix.

Good to know that these issues also appear with M Quadro cards , i have tried titan, titan X and K4000. Did you install the latest service pack + update ? Not that they stop the crashes.

Same here.

Windows version:  Windows 10 Pro x64

3ds Max and Service Pack version:  2017 SP3

Graphics card:  Gainward GTX 1070 Phoenix GS

Current NVDIA driver version:  376.33

All viewport black screen and freezing issues disappear when switching to Nitrous DirectX 9 instead of 11. It mostly occurs when going from the Perspective (maximized) view to the 4-quadrant default layout, when exiting Isolation Mode (Alt+Q) or when using "Maximize Viewport Toggle" (set to "Q" on my end). All of this while editing basic geometry, nothing fancy.

3ds Max 2016 SP3 (and probably SP4, too, but I upgraded to 2017 before installing SP4), did not have these problems on the same machine.

Come on, guys... Doesn't anyone at Autodesk have an Nvidia 10-series card to test before releasing it to the general public? A "QA" team, maybe? SP3 was released in October... We're pushing February, and the software is basically unusable in DirectX 11 mode.

If you goofed up (and you know you did), own up to it and revert the Nitrous driver to whatever was before you goofed.

@Anonymous

It's not just 10-series Nvidia cards, it's ALL supported Nvidia cards; check through everyone's configs in this thread.

Speaking personally, we have no 10-series cards in our office and we are suffering multiple freezes.

Personally I suspect the problem is a combination of factors from Autodesk, Nvidia and Microsoft, and no one single 'goof', which means it will be hard to pin down and might take a while to fix.

FWIW since I reported my freezes, Nvidia have released a new Quadro driver, but the crashes keep happening.

Thank you all for the updated information, and I suspect that @billnuttall is correct.  I appreciate you all taking the time to post the information, having it in once place is helpful to show how widespread this issue is.
