Allow full modelling capability in 3D perspective mode

Every other 3D product that I am familiar with allows by default to view and edit all models in perspective mode. Revit's parallel projection is a real throwback to some ancient era. Please bring Revit into the 21st (or even just the 20th) century and let those of us who are highly visual and need to see things as they might actually appear to edit our models in perspective view.

And I don't mean just a few operations here and there as they are supported now. I would like to be able to always work in perspective mode and only switch to parallel when the need arises due to visual ambiguity or some other impairment caused by perspective display of elements.

This is my all time top wish for Revit.

I think you are missing the point on what make Revit great.  It is great because you can draw in 2D (Plan, Elevation).  Drawing in 3D is difficult (in every other program!!)  You would have to set your plane all the time and use section boxes.

Brenan, you might not have used Sketchup - it doesn't require the need to constantly set planes, and for what it does is brilliantly simple to use.  ArchiCAD also allows 3D Perspective modeling; not nearly as easy as SU, but light-years ahead of Revit.  And Rhino and Maya too, for that matter.  However, you bring up a good point - running quick/easy 3D sections is critical to the success of modeling in 3D (perspective or otherwise).  Revit needs to provide substantial improvements to how the model can be sliced and diced if they are going to provide 3D perspective support.

Having bashed Revit, I should make the point that ArchiCAD does not provide an easy way to arrange windows and work near-simultaneously in multiple view types.  Now that I'm in Revit, I almost never have just one window open and "WT" has become a reflex like closing eyes while sneezing.

Tomek: good idea.

Parallel concepts, check 'em out and vote these up too:

jkucia,

Have have not used Sketchup much, the little I did use I didn't care for.  But I am a structural engineer so I enjoy how precise you can get with Revit and don't really need things to look pretty in 3D.  I have never tried to add things in a camera view before but it sounds difficult.

Rhino an Maya are pretty advanced programs for modeling so i havn't used them before.  I guess that is what I like about Revit is that I don't have to work as hard to model a beam and that the beam comes with all the real life info attached to it (materials etc...)  That is what make Revit BIM.

I think the way you are doing it with multiple windows is how it was intended to work and I doubt they are going to change that workflow.  They want to force you into working in "2D" plans and elevations, even though these are really just sections of the 3D model.

What is the advantage of working in a 3D view?  I like to be able to use the 3D view to make sure things are not clashing.

This is already in process I believe...was announced at RTC NA 2016...  When and what release is unknown though.

I like the fact that I can modify elements that are already in the model now, so that was a big plus..

I am not arguing for one OR the other. I would like to have both precisely because both modes are useful at different times. Parallel is great for precision but perspective is better for design.

I think that Revit is a great system and it's good to see it mature and grow. At the same time it's not the only product on the market and it's easy to get stuck in the mentality that one product should do it all, especially when using something as capable as Revit. I use other tools when it's easier to use them over Revit but at the end of the day I have to be able to bring it all back to Revit for coordination and final documentation. The less I have to break that process into discrete chunks that require custom workflows the more productive I am. Hence my desire for being able to work in perspective mode when designing, it means I don't have to leave Revit to conceptualise and quickly conduct design feasibility experiments.

We are pleased to announce that we have added the ability to fully model and modify elements in perspective views in our 2017.1 release.  If any part of this idea is not available in 2017.1, please create a new idea and start voting. 🙂

THANK YOU!

Eagerly awaiting the release.

Some utile things, like show hidden lines button, are still not allowed.

And of course, Revit is still unintuitive to use in perspective mode.
