"moving" normals

HI,

for a scene with characters I import figures from Maya using FBX as format. Everything works fine, but on some Characters the normals a "moving" (hope you cand see the effect on the two scree shots. In maya the normals look fine. Even a "set to face" command in Maya and a soften Edges doesn´t change the effect. Any ideas?

thank you best regards

How are you exporting the models? Are those static models, skinned models or vertex cache models? Static and skinned models should work just fine. For vertex cache models I am not sure, the vertex cache would need to contain the normals as well and since Maya has the habit of calculating normals on the fly instead of having them stored I am not sure the vertex cache always contains the correct normals.

So if possible I would recommend to use a skinned model for this.

Kind regards

Michael

Hi Michael,

the models are skinned models and work fine for all they should do exept the strange normals. I use an ik rig and save them with the game exproter and fbx, but as well export as fbx does the same.

Hi Michael,

I found the best way to avoid that phenomenon. If I have a polymesh in Maya, I set the normals to face and don´t do a smooth mesh. Exporting it with .fbx the data comes in to VRED without any problems. This is valid for all meshes exproted from Maya which have "flipping" normals.

best regards

Markus
