Hi,
i think the backplate matching task is a little bit faster and easier in maya. If i export my scene as fbx (Dummycar, 5 Cameras with edited filmgate and focal lenght) and import this in VRed..... everything is.....completly destroyed/scaled/rotated etc......
Different fbx formats makes no difference (2009, 2011, 2014)....unitconvert and Z up in the exporter is also not really the way.....
Actual: The car/Grid is correct but the cameras are completly crap...
or: The cameras are ok but the scene is rotated and scaled down (axis problem) / I cant rotate the root/scene etc.......
So is there a correct way for this? Maya to Vred?
Best regards and thanks 🙂
David

Welcome to the world of pain.
I would like to be able to give you a defined answer but for me it seems it takes somethink different to get it working every time I try.
I hate doing it with a passion. I fear it and it makes me depressed when I have to do it.
I am hoping this workflow will improve especially if more people complain about it because it is an absolute nightmare.
Hi,
make sure that your Axis is Z-up in Maya and export via FBX.
There is only one thing that you MUST manually change in VRED. Change the "field of view mode" from vertical to horizontal in the camera's lens attributes.
Make sure that the Sensor Size is correct in both tools (careful, Maya is using inches, VRED is using mm) and that the Focal Length is the same.
It should work fine.
I usually use a locator that I export from Maya and parent a VRED camera to that node in VRED by using "use parent transformation"
But nevertheless I agree, that there is room for improvement in the exchange betweeen Maya and VRED
