AutoCAD 2002 & Windows 10

Can it be installed and run?

My only remaining client, the vinyl swimming pool liner manufacturer, said his laptop "automatically" installed Windows 10.  He certainly does not need nor even want any newer release of AutoCAD.  All they draw are lines and arcs and use BPOLY plus my custom AutoLisp routines to create the 2D panel designs for vinyl material that they cut and weld together to create the liners.  Even if he wanted to buy a new laptop, I'm sure he wouldn't be able to get XP or Win7 as the OS.  Then again, is there anywhere you can buy XP or Win7?

Please say it can be done, and if there are any tricks required please enlighten me.  If necessary, I'll even give up joking around, though not having fun is contrary to my temperament.

"My only remaining client, the vinyl swimming pool liner manufacturer, said his laptop "automatically" installed Windows 10."

Does it mean that it was an automatically upgrade installation from Win7?

If this is the case he is able to roll back to Win7.

HTH

Edit: However, AutoCAD 2002 may not run with Win7.

Thank you so much for responding.

He thinks his laptop was running XP.  I think it was probably Win7, but I can't remember exactly.  In any case, he claims it was an "automatic" upgrade, though he probably just hit a "Yes" button without thinking.

Maybe he can look up his invoice, or maybe even contact Dell.  If it was Win7 can you instruct me how to "roll it back?"  My current laptop is running Win7 and 2002 just fine.  The trick was to install it as administrator.  His other PCs at his work are running 2002 on Win7 as well.  I had installed and configured them.  Somehow, the swimming pool industry in the US is having a very bad year, so he really doesn't have the extra funds to buy 6 seats of new AutoCAD, and he doesn't need a new version anyway.

Or, to the original question, can I install and have 2002 work with his current Win10?  He may be needing to replace PCs soon anyway, and I'm pretty sure he won't have a choice of OS.

I did the upgrade from Win7 to Win10 on my home pc a year ago. It was a free upgrade offered by MS.

I remembered I was told I am able to roll it back to Win7 by a screen message while the installation.

However, I just did a search on the internet - this must be done within 30 days after the upgrade.

Obviously, your client may be able to down grade to Win7 if he has the Win7 disk.

For AutoCAD 2002 on Win7 vehicle, I am sure that both of my AutoCAD and Inventor 2009 versions not working after upgraded to Win7 from WinXP.

At that time we had to install the latest version of AutoCAD (2011 or 2012 ?? don't remember) on to all our company machines.

You are lucky to run 2002 on Win7.

Thank you, BeKirra.  I wasn't lucky,  it has worked numerous times, well say 7/7.

Hope I can find a 2007 CD,

You guys are great for trying to help me out for my client.

It seems that the route we are taking is to pay a local guy only like $160 to roll back the laptop to Win7.  I can deal with that.  His other XP desktop that died will be replaced by a refurbished Dell with Win7.  Although it's sorta like dealing with a broken wrist, my client is thrilled 'cause it's not costing him an arm and a leg.  Smiley Surprised

I have AutoCAD LT2002 running on Windows 10 64 bit (version 1903) in compatibility mode for Windows XP sp3 with no problems after I installed AutoCAD LT2002 sp1 and sp2. The real problem was finding sp2 which requires sp1. Eventually I found them on the internet but I forget where. The file names are  K030ltss1_K044_aclt_unl.exe and acltk044-k047unl.EXE but I forget where I found them. Sp2 contains the fix for the Gedit3 crash.

I was running AutoCAD LT2002 in Windows 7 Pro XP mode. When Microsoft announced Windows 10 free upgrade I did it because Microsoft said they were going to improve compatibility mode. But they did not and AutoCAD LT2002 would not run so I set up a virtual XP machine to run it. Now with version 1903 it works. I think it has something to do with the release of Sandbox.

Thanks for contributing that information.
As much as I have learned is that older ACADs (2002 + 2004) have to be
installed in Win10 using Longbow. You can Google them to learn more and
even give a call to Lex Steel. I have clients that would be dead stuck in
the mud without it.

Thank you.

But it can be done without buying Longbow if you are somewhat computer literate. Although Longbow was a convenient place to get the service packs and I thank them for that. I have AutoCAD 2000, AutoCAD LT98 and AutoCAD LT2002 all running on Windows 10 Pro 64 bit in compatibility mode. It just took some internet searching and no money (of course time is money which may justify using Longbow).

I prefer to use AutoCAD LT2002 because it has a clean GUI and it does everything I want to do.

AutoCAD 2000 and AutoCAD LT98 run fine without installing any service packs. AutoCAD LT2002 will not run reliably without service pack 2.

Thank you again for all that information.
Yes, unfortunately time is money. Too bad this forum doesn't translate our
time into money.
I often wonder how needy some of the inquirers really are.

You know that Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 7 in January 2020. You should try what I have suggested in your spare time (?) and move to Windows 10.

FYI:

You can still buy licenses for Windows XP Pro and 7 Pro on eBay and others. Only buy Pro never buy Home. You can still buy old refurbished computers (with a parallel port) with Windows 7 Pro from Tigerdirect.com and others. Windows 7 Pro has XP mode that can be downloaded from Microsoft. Although Microsoft support for Windows 7 ends in January 2020 and support for Windows XP ended a long time ago. So if you want to download  XP mode for Windows 7 Pro you better do it now even if you don’t plan to use it now. It is a virtual machine program that can be added to 7 Pro anytime. I feel safe using XP with Norton Security without support from Microsoft. Just be sure to turn automatic updates off or it will slow your XP computer down so much you can’t use it because Microsoft took down the support web site so your XP operating system endlessly searches for it unless you turn automatic updates off and also you can turn off the warnings you get every time you boot up. I am sure the same thing will happen with 7 when Microsoft stops supporting it in a few months.

I prefer to use XP now that it doesn’t change anymore. If it works it works. I had a program that was working on Widows 10 Pro and then stopped working after an update because Micosoft decided not to support that function anymore. Not to mention when Microsoft decided that only they could use the LINK command in Windows 10 Pro and caused my Fortran compiler to crash Windows. I can only run my Fortran compiler in Windows XP. So I will always have XP. I now have 3 computers running XP Pro (one of which is a virtual machine on 10 Pro), one running 7 Pro (which is on a triple boot computer with XP Pro and 10 Pro) and 4 running 10 Pro.
