'What's new' report after new version

'What's new' report after new version

Problem:

After a new version is created Vault must be able to tell me what the differences are between the current version and the previous version of the document. Users like to know what changed in the drawing/model when a newer version is available.

The differences to be detected:

- Content change of BOM. (What is added/removed?)

- Volume/mass/material/other properties of document changed

- change of faces (color, position, chamfer added/removed)

Auto run:

Rules can be set when this function must be executed. For example when state is set to 'Released', the category = "designs" and the file extension = ".iam".  The task is placed in the queue of the job processors.

Manuel run:

User selects two versions in Vault Client History table. Function can run on local host or placed in the queue of the job processors.

Result:

Result is stored in vault and can be viewed again in a later time. A link to the result can be created and used in an email. The result can be used as the content of the description of the new version.

So what you are asking Vault to do is to open up the latest version and previous versions of a file using the CAD application, analyze the difference, then record all of the differences in the comments of the latest version? If so, the CAD applications would need the ability to perform this type of analysis before Vault can record the differences.

Correct, two versions must be opend and differences collected.

If we look at the BOM, these tables can be compared quite easily.

Inside Vault the 'Uses' lists can be checked for differences.

Autocad has an option two show the differences between two drawings.

And comparing properties to see if these are changed is not rocket science as well I think.

There is a bigger challenge in looking at shape differences.

Thanks, while I understand your idea, it would require work in the CAD application first before Vault could record the information. I suggest creating Ideas in the CAD applications Idea boards to get this started.

I addition to Irvin's comment -  please consider including the "Duplicate Search" functionality under testing  to find geometric differences (useful for imported STEP files etc.). Combine this with a comparison of the feature tree between files plus something similar to the DWF Comparison for 2D documents, and you would have the base for a more telling "delta" report as suggested by Maarten.
