What is changed in 2016

The focus is always on what's new in any new version but not much is ever said about functionality or features that have changed.

Menus that have changed, Functionality Removed.

We the users and administrators only find out through a lot of trial and a lot of ERROR whan no longer works form one version to the next.  It makes it difficult to do quick upgrades because much time is spent dealing with updating workflows at the hand of learning the hard way what no longer works.

In some cases, the functionality is still there but the tools to do it have changed and some functionality is simply removed with no explaination.

It would be nice to see a list of here is what is removed, you can no longer do that and a list of what functionality has changed, Old tool referenced to the new method.

Is the readme giving you any of this information?

Irvine,

Thanks for the response. The readme has been of some help, but not on many things. Here is an example of what I am talking about:

Looking for Restore Item which was removed in 2015 R2.  The remdme sent me to a link in the 2015 Help which explained the Restore feature where it tells you what Restore is but has this line:

Note: This feature is not available in Vault 2015 R2.

OK, what takes it's place?  It is not clear in the article.

For most things I have had to search 2014 (our current version), 2015, 2015 R2 and 2016 using the What's New as well as the Help and the Autodesk Forums to work through Item by Item what has changed in the menus.

The problem is twofold, 1) Any programming we have written to automate the process of Check In, Assign and Update Items from within Inventor and AutoCAD. All these things require us to dig into them and see what is broken then find solutions.  Most of the time we are doing trial and error to find the solution to replace existing functionality.

2) Rolling this version out to users requires us to go through not only the New items which is always exciting but our users know there are changes to existing functionality as well. We need to be able to provide them with information to continue to do their jobs without a huge learning curve. I have to prepare documentations/presentations to inform them of any changes.

A list of the changes to existing functionality that was a subset of What's New would be fantastic addition to the Autodesk documentation and make our life simpler. Something that says this functionality is removed and is replaced with... or no longer necessary in 2016.

We see the big "be aware REMOVED FUNCTIONALITY" message when we create the deployment. Tell us what was removed and how to deal with it.

Thanks,

I find the informational side of Vault Pro to be difficult to navagate as well.  Most of API understanding comes from vapiTrace first (to discover what command does what), then the API documentation (to learn about the commands' input & output definitions), then the forums (to see an example of it being used).  Examples on the API help doc would be great!  Plus if the SDK installer could add it to the VStudio help list, so I can press F1 on the object in Code and get the API help doc to jump to that item.  Also i find myself studing the stored proceedures to understand which of 3 Ids to pass in for said routine to work, also not well documented.  Uh Oh, I'm now in the SQL server mucking around, I hope I'm not breaking anything.  (Good think each vault gets it's own copy of stored proceedures, and I can play around in a blank test vault, database).

And finally, VIDEOS, don't teach everything, and are not indexible for quick sound bytes, so don't forget to keep writing searchable indexed text documents, that are UP TO DATE (note for all program vendors).  You can't imagine how confusing it is to see for Vault 2014, in a document about Vault 2016.  Even if it does apply, at times, it would be nice to at least see 2014-2016 to verify I didn't jump to a wrong page (ex, server install notes).

Thanks,
