In order to fully support the process for automatic numbering of Part numbers and items number consequently, Vault numbering inside Inventor, should support coding for Model States creations:

This is GREATLY needed. We are in the process of replacing all in-house iParts/iAssemblies for various reasons and replacing them with Model States. These differing States of course, need their own official part number.
Having to manually input what you think is the next sequential number is a huge open door for errors.
