Select which Inventor session/window will open a Vault file

I was opening Inventor files from Vault with two Inventor instances running. The message we get is this (and the file will not open):

morethan1Inventorsession.JPG

Since there is already a prompt in place, it would make it easier to have a selection of which window/instance of Inventor to open it with, instead of having to navigate our complex folder structure in "Open from Vault", or right-click and "Go to Working Folder", then locate the file among several within the folder and drag-and-drop it to the Inventor instance desired.

In some cases we need two different projects open to compare, and it is useful to have multiple Inventor sessions working in parallel.

Thank you.

Hi,

I think that running several Inventor sessions in parallel is not a good idea in general. The workspace architecture of Inventor does not support file versions. What result would you expect by opening assembly A containing version 1 of component B and in the other Inventor session opening assembly B containing version 2 of component B.

There can be only one version of a file in workspace currently.

Best regards

Erik

It is actually a great idea, but not in general. If you're not an advanced user, you might never open different projects. For advanced users though, this is extremely necessary at times. We generally open different files, but in the case you listed above, all it takes is a bit of common sense in saving a pack-and-go of the different version somewhere else. In fact, you would not be able to get 2 different versions overlapping the same file in your Vault workspace. And if you checked out (or removed read-only) from such file, you should overwrite the open version which would prompt Assembly A to be updated. For challenging projects we come up with bold approaches to work around them. I believe more functionality comes out of necessity, and peer pressure from the competition that might be able to do it. Thank you, - Gabriel

Our users complain about this all the time, too. We have a high reuse of common components between projects. So people from the custom design department almost always want to open two projects in parallel. But I guess creating a pack& go would not be accepted by our users.

I'm more pointing towards Autodesk doing it like the competitors, for example naming the workspace file as "part.ipt.001" for version 1 or something similiar.
