"Explode" Vault > Tools > Administration button

"Explode" Vault > Tools > Administration button

Please promote both buttons within the Administration button: Vault Settings and Global Settings.

These should be lined up above "Options..." in the menu, or in a completely different tab called "Administration" (if the intent is to keep only administrator roles able to access it, which currently is not true).

I am hoping this can be a simple change to execute, thank you.

@Gabriel_Watson

What problem are you solving with this. These two options are settings that effect all users.

The "Options.." button only effects this specific user which is why they are separated.

Also, only administrators or users with the correct admin level permissions can make changes in those location.

Out of the box they are, Administrators and Configuration Administrators.

1- It's an issue that might require a UX analysis from Autodesk, so the "problem" would be usability (to facilitate use). Those are not so black and white to distinguish complete success, but denote a lot of preference (hence why a post here might gage its acceptance with others). When you have such a small sub-menu like the Administration, it is very easy to "fall down the staircase" by hovering your mouse slightly above or under the only two options (Vault Settings and Global Settings) fanned out on the right. I can't count how many times I have miss-clicked out of those. And, of course, it saves time when avoiding extra clicks with almost no value (those sub-menus are already pretty distinct from other options above as they are).

2- I understand the difference between Options affecting the single user, and that is why perhaps an alternative I would be happy with would be to display a separate tab altogether for "Administration" (which could be omitted for users that aren't admins). There is plenty of "real state" for more tabs on the top menu, since Vault does not carry many. Yet another alternative is to rename "Options..." to "Client Options", "User Options", or maybe "User settings". Those would be enough contrast to "Vault Settings" and "Global Settings".

3- Making changes is restricted to admins only, but opening those menus is available to more roles. Sometimes the restriction for non-admins is shown very late in the game (for example when attempting to edit a lifecycle state). But that is a different topic to delve into.

@ihayes If there is a problem of ambiguity with "Vault Settings" and "Global Settings" being confused with "Options" related only to the user, I would say a much bigger issue already exists between "Options" and "Customize". The suggestions above seem pretty straightforward to me, and most likely to other experienced end-users. I hope this clarification helps in translating our perspective to the Vault team.

Thanks for your feedback. I will have the UX team review this.

Thank you!

I just remembered a use case somewhat related to this, which could be worth sharing... back in April a big company had some reps talking on a side table of a conference corridor about bringing their latent Vault up to speed into production, and I helped them out with some issues (and what future challenges they could expect in the next years).

Their main problem then was simply deleting a test folder leftover from the previous Vault configuration used. And the solution was as simple as Tools > Options > check “Show hidden files”, to see that there was a hidden file stopping them as admins from deleting the folder above the file. Simple problem, but it illustrates how admins use some of the settings under Options (way) more often than a regular user, and how that single setting can also break an admin workflow for hours, even with full "god-like" permissions. The lines are a bit blurry sometimes.

Instead of moving the Vault Settings and Global Settings menu picks around, I would much prefer to just have them all under the Administration button. It would be so much easier if you just opened an administration dialog that had all the options in it and you didn't have to switch back and forth between two tools.

Just let me do all the configuration of everything in Vault in one place. That would/could include things like folder permissions as well.
