Publish PDF to external folder

Publish PDF to external folder

We really need the ability sort of like the Vault Enterprise Tools offers to allow anyone using Vault to publish a PDF of a selected drawing or drawings to an external folder. I get that the plot tool is supposed to do this at some level but it's missing the mark in so many ways. I just want to publish the PDF of the file I select without children to a folder I choose. It would be really nice if the job processor could do all the work, and then deliver the PDF to the client when the job is done.

@ThomasRambach

You can have the PDF publishing go to an external folder already.

@ihayesjr That only sets it globally. We still need the PDF attached in Vault for released drawings, but we also need a PDF saved externally for review.

Selecting one of the bottom two options allows you to save the PDF to an external folder.

@ihayesjr I'm not sure how that would allow to simultaneously create an attached PDF when a drawing releases in Vault and create an external PDF when a drawing state changes. It seems like one or the other but not both.

This option controls where the PDF is stored in Vault.

This option controls how the PDF will be published outside of Vault.

@ihayesjr I feel like we're not on the same page with this issue. Let me see if I can rephrase.

I have 2 drawings in Vault.

  • The 1st drawing, I need to click the "Make PDF" button and have Vault create the PDF, upload to Vault and attach it to the drawing.
  • The 2nd drawing, I need to create a PDF and save it to a network folder \\servername\pdfs\.

Both of these workflows are currently possible in Vault, I agree with that. What is not possible is to do both of these workflows without first changing the administrator options for PDFs first. I would have to make the 1st PDF, go into the Vault admin options to change the PDF options, then click the button to make the 2nd PDF.

I want to be able to have both of these workflows available from the "Make PDF" command where the job sent to the job queue has parameters that tell the job processor what kind of PDF to make, either upload and attach to Vault or save to an external folder.

I'll see if I can find you at AU to clarify more if I needed.

@ThomasRambach

Thanks for the clarification. However, this would complicate the issue for the Job Processor. If you have multiple Job Processors and multiple locations for each PDF to go to, you would have to make sure that all Job Processor machines' user accounts have access to all possible shares, or the Job would fail.

The user should pull the PDF out of Vault after it was created or from the configured location and copy it to the specific destination.

@ihayesjr What you described is exactly how the Vault Enterprise Tools work. Multiple locations, multiple job processors.

My real issue is it's almost October and I'm still waiting on VAO 2025 to release.

Thank you @ihayesjr. I appreciate the consideration for this.
