Not sure if you ever found this but you can place items as virtual components. Just use the place from Vault and then go to the advanced search. Type in your search criteria and set the Look For to Items. Then when you select your item you can choose to place the primary file associated with that item or you can place it as a virtual component. This is done using 2024.4
Yes, I know that way. It just looks rather tedious and time consuming to me. I agree with your other comment that it is almost easier to use empty dummy components instead.
