'Open' files with Inventor View if Inventor is not installed

If the Vault Client is installed on a system with no full Inventor version, the user gets the following error message when he tries to 'open' a file from the Vault Client:

This_file_was_created_with_Inventor.png

Even if Inventor View is selected as the default application for Inventor files, the files won't open from Vault unless you use the function 'View in Window..'. All other file types are downloaded to the workspace and 'opened' with the standard application.

The usual workaround is to select 'Invoke on doubleclick: View in Window...' within the Tools - Options menu. But this is not set by default, and the user has to find this solution before he can use the software frictionless 'out of the box'.

Please improve the experience of new users by making the 'Open' functionality work more 'intuitive' if no full Inventor version is installed.

And  Vault should also use DWG true view  AutoCAD is not installed.

This same idea could be used to allow batch plotting of drawing files if no dwf exists.  Plotting does not need to be an engineering function and therefore should not require full software.

Be careful with Inventor View. The old Problem described in my post "Wrong title block entries when open idw with Inventor View" is still not fixed. Tested with VaultPro 2017 and Inventor 2017.

Note: If a dwf file is available for the Inventor file, the function 'View in Window' will open a built in Window of  'Autodesk Design Review' and represents the dwf file. If no dwf file has been generated, 'View in Window' will open Inventor View.

In Windows explorer associate Inventor files to Inventor View to Open. And then try to Open from Vault Explorer. It should Open in Inventor view in this case.

Problem with Inventor View is, that properties linked to vault props and
shown on the
drawing are not updated by Inventor View after a change in Vault.

Try the following:

1. create an user defined iProperty in Inventor

2. use this iProperty in a title block

3. in Vault - link a Vault property to the above created iProperty

4. edit Vault property - it should now update in Vault an in the
drawing

5. open drawing with Inventor View -> Title block is not reflecting the
change

6. open same drawing in Inventor -> Title block shows the correct value

That's for posting the idea. This idea doesn't currently fit into our future strategy with Vault so I am going to Archive it.

We are looking into that.
