Folder Display SHOULD NOT Show the Plus Sign Beside an empty folder

Currently, Vault shows a plus sign next to an empty folder. If you click on the plus, it disappears.

It would be much better if it only displayed the plus for folders that contained files or links.

This has been an issue for many releases - I could not find any previous ideas regarding this.

I think I already logged this one somewhere but it might have got archived away because the Vault Ideastation has ben somewhat neglected.

But I was told that they do this because in a large Vault, it took too much processing power to query the contents of every folder.  If you had 400 subfolders, Vault client would need to query each subfolder every time you expanded them to see if they had anything in them... so to reduce the overhead they just put a plus next to every one and query it on access.  It's extremely annoying and I assume lazy programming, there has to be a better method for doing this.

This is akin to the Shroendinger's Cat paradox. Vault can only find out if a folder is full when you click to see it, therefore all folders are assumed empty and not empty at the same time... until you verify. When we "Expand All" under a certain folder which has subfolders, it does it so quickly because it will avoid predicting the states of each subfolder.

What we actually need to help us then is for Vault to check the immediately lower level of a folder, when we are browsing through the Vault browser on the left pane. If we open a folder, at least the folders on the level below should be checked for content. That should reduce the processing time and make our demands satisfied. Worst case scenarios where a folder contains hundreds of other folders are rare, and at least the wait time then will be better than verifying manually each subfolder.

Maybe Vault can show a dialog that asks the user if they want to query all sub folders under a selected folder, say "designs" when the user expands the "designs" folder? It would be nice if the number of sub folders under a particular folder is under the threshold (for example 400 subfolders like you mentioned), we don't get this dialog and Vault automatically queries every folder.

I posted the same idea back in 2016.  The idea was prompted from a question on the Vault forum and Senthil looked into it then.  He actually proposed a solution that seemed to work for me.  Still has not been implemented... guess there are bigger fish to fry.

Here is what he proposed. http://www.screencast.com/t/9dX49gsmJ5r

This idea is now available in Autodesk Vault 2020.2 Update released on last Friday. See also the Vault 2020.2 Update help for some of the details:
