Edit properties during a copy design

Edit properties during a copy design

I thought there was an idea for this, but I am unable to find it today - I know Autodesk is aware of it.

It would be great if we could edit the properties of files in the copy design window while doing a copy design. We can view them there - but we are unable to edit.

This is a fantastic idea! It just makes sense because generally is more than just a number that is changing when copy design is being used and the necessary steps to update all of those properties almost defeats the expediency factor for copy design.

Hi

When making a design copy, you want to create a rule set. I'm setting up a rule condition builder and inputting the behavior of the attribute, but I would like to be able to manually enter values for the behavior of the attribute or have more options. Due to the limited number of values you can enter in the feature operation, it is cumbersome to do something else after copying the design. Is that the only me?

It would be helpful to pull the "copied from" information from the copied design and put it on the newly copied design, on the drawing, for at least three reasons that come to mind right away:

  1. For quoting, a vendor may say "oh, it's similar to this other part we've quoted" and get a quote faster.
  2. For machining, a machinist may say "oh, it's similar to this other program I already have saved in my library" and have the CNC program ready faster.
  3. For design, someone who only has the drawing (and not full Vault access) may look at the "copied from" part number and recognize it from another project they may be familiar with, and use that to find other "same as, but" similar drawings.

For speaking english people:

Customers miss / want to be able to change the necessary properties in the dialog for CopyDesign. Of course, this only makes sense for properties that are not automatically filled in by Inventor itself, such as dimensions, material, etc.
Overall, the copy dialog becomes more complex, but the user saves the necessary rework in separate steps and dialogs, e.g. changing properties after CopyDesign or BOM processing in Inventor.

When using the Vault Copy Design tool, it would be nice if we could have a pre-defined value option in the Property Behaviors section.  When using Vault Lifecycles and Revision schemes, new files need to have a CAD Revision Number that is equal to the default for the Revision Scheme of a file.  A file that is being Copy Designed, may be at a higher revision level than a new file would have so it needs to be set to the default.  Generally, a Blank value is not acceptable so setting it to "Blank" doesn't usually work.  Setting the value to "Reset" doesn't work for files that were originally blank.  During the Copy Design process it would be nice to have the ability to set a pre-defined value so the new files will have the correct default value so the files don't become "non-compliant".  Options would be: In the Action drop-down, add an option for "Set Custom Value" or under the "Set Value As" setting, add an option that would allow a user to type in a value.  Another option would be "Set to Revision Scheme".

In the Action drop-down, the "Set Custom Value" or the "Set Value As" options should be available for all properties, not just the Rev Number property.

Greetings.

Great idea!

Our users really want it and in the previous system (which this was possible), it had really good results.

Currently we have a lot of duplicate IDs (we have custom IS), because users are not able to changed them during "Copy Design".

It would be also great, if there would be a possibility for "prefix" or "suffix".

Best regards,

Hi Vault team,

are there any news regarding this idea?

Customers really need such a functionality.

At the moment the only solution is to customize Vault Data Standard "Copy/replace" and edit properties there.

My opinion: VDS is not designed for it. A project copy should be done with Vault board functionalities, but for that the property edit have to be done during the copy design.

Best regards!

Dominik

We have the same need for something like this. We are using CopyDesign very often and we have some fields which should always be "SET VALUE AS" a custom / admin defined value. Sadly there is no option for this in the Purge:

It should not be a big problem to let us insert a Custom Value here which will always be mapped in the propertie and not only these five pre defined mappings...

Thanks

Hello
It would be good if you could map the property of the destination folder directly in the Copy design Rules.
Currently we create a project folder with the project properties. When I copy a design into the new folder,
I always have to update the properties of the project folder (e.g. project number) in the file via Update properties after the copy process.
This is a repetitive job that Vault Professional should be able to take care of.

When I create a new part later in the design and save it in the project folder, the VDS fills in the part properties from the project folder.

It often happens that customers want to copy entire branches of a construction via the “Copy construction” / "copy design" dialog and want to change the title of the construction to be copied directly in the dialog, for example.

According to an entry in the FAQ, it is not possible (in 2023) to change this property in CopyDesign.
See https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Overwrite-properti...

This costs the designer a lot of time every time, as he has to search for all the parts again after copying.
Of course, he can search for and change them subsequently via the (new) assembly.
However, these are additional steps, which cost the designer unnecessary time and slow down the construction process.

Idea:
It would be a great advantage to make the fields editable in this dialog (in the Copy design, before executing the copy) and to treat them according to the principle as in the Vault Client.
A function like in the Vault Client, that allows you to copy the content of a field to other components / assemblies by dragging down the small dot on the right.
In order not to have all fields editable, this could be restricted by configuring which fields may be changed during this process.

Most former users of Autodesk PSP (Compass) were used to this functionality being available in the program and are very disappointed by its absence in Vault!
