DWF creation after Copy Design

DWF creation after Copy Design

Dear Autodesk,

If you do a Copy Design to copy a CAD structure, the new files are not published with DWFs. It would be nice to have an option to enable it similar it is possible with check in operation from Inventor/AutoCAD Mechanical, so that the job processor is creating it in background.

Reason is, it is recommended to check out the new file structure to have ready the BOM blob for correct item/BoM assignment, but if not everything (specially IPTs and IDWs) is checked out/in, DWFs are missing. Sync items to Fusion Manage would be happy to receive always the DWFs.

Thank you

You can keep the link to the existing DWFs while copying: https://help.autodesk.com/view/VAULT/2025/ENU/?guid=GUID-8076C1FB-8271-40B4-B3A5-51E0E39BB717

As long as you don't change the file the DWF should be fine. And when changing it you get a new one anyway.

@RajSchmidt,

Thank you for your reply.

We are already aware of it, but for drawing files, according the copy design rules we empty some properties, shown in the title block, so the old DWF is wrong. Therefor my request to generate the DWF new from copied file.

Personally, I prefer DWF files to be generated only when the source files reach a Released state, or when they are explicitly marked for consulting/view-only purposes, even if they are not yet MFG Released.

In my view, a Copy Design operation creates a new working structure that is still under development, so publishing DWFs at that stage could expose data that is not yet ready for wider consumption.

Automatically generating DWF files at that stage could result in the publication of immature or incomplete data, increase storage requirements, and create unnecessary processing load.

That said, I can understand why immediate DWF generation may make sense in some workflows. Every company and every use case is different.

Perhaps Autodesk is already aware of this concern, which may be one of the reasons why DWF generation is not currently triggered automatically during a Copy Design operation.

For me, DWFs are part of the publishing process rather than the design process.
