Copy Design - copy maintaining the folder structure

Hello.

I suggest an idea on the actual Copy Design.

Now Copy Design, selecting all the components of an assembly to copy, by choosing "copy to", copy all the files non maintaining the structure of the input folders. In the case of an assembly which has a defined structure with subfolders, we need that selecting the assembly (that is the root) the "Copy to" maintains the structure of the input assembly.

This is useful for example when we copy an assembly created with frame generator.

Hi Omar,

Would you be able to elaborate more on your suggested idea? Maybe some form of illustration of what is the result.

I''m not clear on the part on the "input assembly" & "input folders" part. 

I'm assuming that you would like to have a quick way to copy the various files into different respective destination subfolders.

Hi paery.

I'll try to illustrate better my idea.

We want to use Copy Design to copy an assembly which was created using also Frame Generator and/or Design Accelerator and/or Piping, so that we have also some subfolders like for example FRame, Design Accelerator or also AIP. Then, we have a situation like this on the Tree View:

Now, we want to copy this assembly and we want the same structure for the copy result, the same subfolders, but I decide only the output root folder where I want to copy the AssemblyToCopy.iam; so the output result is with the assembly renamed AssemblyCopied.iam e the root folder that will be renamed from AssemblyToCopy to AssemblyCopied, maintaining all the sub folder and also all the names.

The Copy Design should show me the possibility to choise between "Maintain the folders structure" or "Do a flat copy".

I hope to have been clearer.

You assumed correctly that  in other words we would like to have a quick way to copy the various files into different respective destination subfolders.

We have now also a customer that requires this functionality, because it is not possible to decide the output folder for 300 files, one to one, because also there are some files with the same name that Copy Design copy in only one folder.

Hi Omar,

You can achieve this with the current Vault Workgroup/Professional copy design. There are a few ways.

I usually just use the folder 'tree view' to copy instead - i would right hand click on the folder that contain the files and select 'Copy To...'

This will maintain the structure. It doesn't take long either.

The solution you proposed is a partial solution, because in case we had many folders it's not siple selecting every folder for the "Copy To", but we asked  an automatism to do this for every folder and every file.

I support this request 100%.  During the very first presentation of the new Copy Design feature at AU I reminded the development team about the auto folder structures of Frame generator, Tube&Pipe and Stress Calculation. These folder structures must keep the same during the copy action. The structure is known in Inventor (Inventor creates the folders himself when using these functions) so the logic is available to propose the new folder structure during a Copy Desgn action.

I'm also looking forward for such functionality. It currently takes 15min for copying Tube&Pipe projects.
