Copy Design - Automatically GET Copy-Designed Files

Copy Design - Automatically GET Copy-Designed Files

Hi All,

It would be helpful to have an options box (true/false) for directing the Vault to automatically GET the files contained within a copy design. Yes it 's possible to navigate from the source file location to the target file location, get the files, then navigate to the local target file location. However, I'm sure I'm not the only one who has copy designed something, then went straight to the local file location only to be confused for a split second on where the new files were.

Per occurrence, this could save maybe 20-45 seconds of navigation, depending on the magnitude of sublevel folders and time spent wondering where the new files went. This also increases if you direct files to multiple file locations for nested subassemblies and have multiple required GET functions to perform.

Please comment if you would find this functionality useful, if you know of a method to perform this already, if you have an improvement to this idea, or just for kicks.

Thanks, and vote up!

-Joe

In the Vault 2020 release, after the Copy Design process is complete, the Copy Design dialog will remain open and you can right-click on the assembly and select Go To Destination Folder. This will take you directly to the file then you can right-click and select Open. Do you think this will help?

ihayesjr,

I think that may help in the case of Copy Designing to a single destination folder. For assemblies with multiple destination folders for subassemblies, will the dialog box stay open after navigating to the first destination?

I think this is a step in the right direction, but it would be very helpful to automate the entire "Getting" step after a Copy Design.

Thanks,

Joe

Yea the dialog will remain open and you can go to any file in the Copy Design dialog.

ihayesjr,

I look forward to trying this feature out. My gut feeling is that while this may help chip away at the overall time spent Getting files, it's really just replacing one set of mouse clicks and navigation with another.

I've seen that you can also get a report of all the copied files. It might be a good idea to save that and use ist as a ToDo list...

Now that I have used Vault Pro 2020 for a while, I find that the Go To command in the RMB menu is ok, but it could be better.

My process now is to :

  1. Set up the copy design
    1. Keep a copy of the source component open in Inventor on my left monitor
    2. Review the structure of the source component with Inventor and set each member file to copy in Vault, as required.  I usually change out 10-50 components in a several hundred component assembly.
  2. Change all the part numbers using Numbering Schemes
  3. Whine that I can't change component iprops, like Description, during the copy design. 😉
  4. Execute the copy.
  5. RMB on the top-level component and select Go To destination folder
  6. In the destination folder, RMB on the new top level component and select Get or Open
  7. Start updating the design as required.

I'd much rather have a Get or Open command so I can start work with Inventor as soon as the Copy-Design process is complete.
