Shared Views behaves differently from Vault than it does from the native CAD programs.

I've noticed a significant difference in the behavior when Vault creates a shared view verses the native CAD program. When a shared view is created from AutoCAD Mechanical, or Inventor, the shared view contains all the layers in the state that they were when the drawing was saved (Visible/Off). When Vault creates a shared view of the exact same file, the shared view only includes the layers that were visible when the drawing was saved.

The missing layer information issue is true for the dwf file Vault generates too. This prevents us from using the visualizations and causes us to generate PDF files with all the layer information turned on to make it available.

We are a global company with manufacturing facilities in 5 different countries. We make use of language layers to allow each facility to work from a single drawing that has drawing notes in their native language.

@ihayesjr Are there plans for the visualizations and shared views generated in Vault to include all the layer information as it seems to be working when shared views are created from the native software? If so, When can we expect to see these changes?

@Ronald_Moore

Do you have this option turned on?

Vault generates the DWF files based on the CAD product's export capabilities.

From what I can see, if you export a DWF of a drawing with AutoCAD, AutoCAD does not have the option to include layers that are not visible.

Can you confirm this with one of your drawings?

This is true, dwf's generated by Autocad do not include layers that are not visible. I was hoping, after seeing the difference in behavior with the shared view, that Autodesk recognized this as a problem and was working on correcting the issue.

So if we provided a method in Vault to send the DWG instead of the DWF file to Shared Views, would that work for you?

Hi Irvin,

Thank you for taking time to respond to my post. I really appreciate it.

The biggest problem we face is not being able to use the Autodesk viewer, or Autodesk Design Review, in vault because of the missing layer information. I was using how the saved views are working, when made from the native cad software, as an example of how we would need the internal viewer in vault to work.

Ideally what we need is to be able open a viewer and see the drawing with all the layer information available so that the user, typically a Machine Operator/Assembler using the thin client, would be able to turn on his native language layer.

Best regards,

Thanks for the explanation. Is your need for this to work in Vault (Thick and Thin Clients) or Shared Views or both?

Ideally both, but my priority would be the Vault Viewer utilizing both thick & thin clients.
