Opening files from Vault opens them in C:\TEMP\(random folder name) instead of Vault Workspace folder

My colleague has a strange problem using Inventor and Vault.

When he gets a file from Vault, it downloads correctly to our C:\Vault_Workspace\Designs folder. And if the file is opened from this location manually in Inventor, everything is fine and the file can be checked in and out.

However, if he opens the file from Vault, it downloads OK to C:\Vault_Workspace\Designs, but when the file opens in in Inventor it's, a version that's stored in C:\TEMP\(random folder name). This means that when he goes to check the file in, it doesn't work as it's not in the right location for check in.

Example:

Anyone had any ideas on how to fix this? It doesn't occur on anyone else's computer in the office. And I've checked that the Working Folder Options are all correct and he has the latest version of our Vault Project.

This usually happens if you drag and drop a file from Vault onto the Inventor application to open it. Is he right-click > Opening, or dragging and dropping when this happens?
Just to make sure, see that the correct project file is active when opening.

Hello,

Please check your inventor project file set in Inventor.

At times this can go wrong due to some vault action (view command done from client which uses Inventor Read only mode to view the file - in this case ipj and the actual file is downloaded to c:\temp location). Please let us know what action did you do from vault before running into this issue in Inventor project.

Regards,

Yogeshwar

Thanks for your reply. This seems to be the cause of the issue.

Dragging and dropping a file to the Inventor application is a habit many of us got into in the days before we used Vault, because when you double-clicked on a file on a network drive, Inventor would sporadically decide to open up a new instance of Inventor. It wasn't predictable either - double-clicking would sometimes open in your existing Inventor instance, and sometimes it would open up a new instance. Dragging and dropping would consistently open the file in the existing instance, so that's what people often defaulted to using.

However, now that we have Vault, we'll discontinue this practice and always open directly within Vault. Thanks for sorting this out!

The project file was OK. It was an issue of dragging and dropping from Vault to the open Inventor application.

Hey, you're welcome! I've had to tell people not to do this for 8 years, lol, so there is no rush to get your company culture on track, as long as you know this.

This seems more like a bug since it alters the project file behind the user's back. No prompts.

Hello We have the same issue that when our production open file in read only mode there are part unresolved, not fond in TEMP folder. I tried everything to slove it, open from vault in Inventor check out all parts en check in all parts with the correct project file. And still when production open the files directly from the Vault office still have error, can't find parts in TEMP folder.

We know how it happend but how can we fix it?
