Assign New Item Number on Item Import

Hello,

I have a scenario where we will be creating BOMs using the item master without the use of files.  These item master records will drive our ERP system.  We have a lot of situations where the Copy Design feature (for files) would be very useful to us if it worked on items as well.  I was told by our consultant to use the Item BOM export/import to mimic the Copy Design feature.  The issue I'm having now is assigning new item numbers to any assemblies that have changed.

Here's the scenario - I want to copy an assembly, but add/remove some items.  The top level item should become a new item number. 

I am able to do a CSV export of the item BOM.  I make my changes in the CSV file.  For new item records I was leaving the item number field blank.  My hope was that Vault would auto-number these and create new item records.  Vault is not allowing me to import these without putting an item number manually.

Any advice?

I hope I am interpreting your question accurately, if not I apologize.  I did a screencast showing my process of copying an Item Master and manipulating the contained BOM entries.  I use a file generated Item Master but I do not believe that is a factor.

Not exactly.  I'm talking about importing an item BOM from a spreadsheet (CSV).  I want to Vault to generate new item numbers using the numbering scheme for items that don't have a part number in the Number column.

Right now my workaround is to number all new items something unique (ABC1, ABC2, ABC3) using my initials.  Then I sift back through the items and renumber them.

I do not think that there is a way to generate numbers on import.

have you tried setting the number to the values that would be generated?

No, I don't think either of these will work.  I don't want to manually assign numbers if I've got a numbering sequence that could take care of it.  I'll browse through the idea submissions for Vault and see if this request is already out there.

Here's the ideastation link for "Copy Design on Items".  This is the main problem I'm trying to solve.  I've been importing/exporting csv files and the workflow is tedious.  Being able to autonumber on import would just make the workaround a little easier.  If there was a copy design for items, I wouldn't need this improvement to the workaround.
