VDS: how to save several IDW based on a single model reference?

Hello!

Below question is related to saving IDW files referencing the same IPT or IAM model, given that Vault Pro is set to "Enforce Unique Filename".

Some situations request a single model (IPT, IAM) to be the reference of several drawings (IDW).

For example:

-one drawing intended for manufacturing, displaying the necessary dimensions or informations,

-one drawing intended for customer, only displaying the overall dimensions.

Here is the case:

From a model reference 1234.ipt or 1234.iam, when placing the 1st view onto a 1st IDW file, this IDW filename is automatically renamed according to the model reference filename, i.e. 1234.idw.

In VDS, the filename is set to 1234.idw. The IDW file can be saved. Up to here, all works fine.

From the same model reference, when placing the 1st view onto a 2nd new IDW file, this IDW filename is automatically renamed according to the model reference filename, i.e. again 1234.idw.

In VDS, the filename is again set to 1234.idw. As Vault is set to "Enforce Unique Filename", it is of course impossible to save the file. The filename can be set manually in the VDS textbox, however it would be out of the Numbering Scheme defined in Vault.

Should I give up with the possibility of several drawings based on the same model reference?

Or should I reconsider the scenarii?

This question is closely linked to this topic still unanswered:

part number <> drawing number

Best regards,

Leon

Hello,

First of all - I don't think this is related to VDS in any way.

Without VDS as well you would see the same behaviour - second drawing file will still get the same name as that of the referenced model and cannot be saved/checkedin to Vault when 'Enforce Unique FileName' is set in Vault.

So till the 'Enforce Unique Filename' is set in Vault - you cannot checkin 2 files (drawing or any other too) having same file name.

May I ask if is it a must for you to have the drawing files with matching file name as that of the referencing model? and why is that so ?

Because this cannot be supported in any way with above option setting. You can definitely have multiple drawing files referencing same model but with different drawing file names.

Hello Yogeshwar,

Yes, this behavior is not related to VDS.

No, it is not a must an IDW filename matches its IPT/IAM reference filename: drawing and model can have unrelated filenames, they only must use the same Vault Numbering Scheme.

"Enforce Unique Filenames" is the first must. Using VDS, is it possible an IDW being assigned a new filename (using a Numbering Scheme), rather than by default being assigned the reference IPT/IAM filename? (I suppose it requests some modifications in the default.ps1 file)

Multiple IDW referencing a same IPT/IAM is the second must. Except... except if somebody can convince me 1 IPT/IAM should be the reference of 1 (and only 1) IDW:

part number <> drawing number

Thank you for your above reply (as well as your last year replies, through our Autodesk Agent)!

Hello,

Got you ! There is a Vault option inside Inventor 'Vault' ribbon.: "Generate File Numbers for drawing and presentation files" - This works as you want.

Please make sure you have the Numbering scheme configured properly to use with VDS.

Thank you for clarifying !

Hello Yogeshwar,

That works exactly as intended, thank you for this tip.

Beside, it seems this setting cannot be exported/imported within the Application Options xml file, right?

How can the Vault Administrator ensure every Users are configured with the same setting?

Best regards,

Leon

Hello Leon,

This setting can be used using an xml file :

C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\Inventor **** Vault Addin\ApplicationPreferences.xml

and setting name :

<Property Name="GFN4SpecialFiles" Value="True" />

Administrator needs to copy the above file (with desired settings) to each users appdata folder mentioned above.
