Provide the ability to assign an empty string or null value to an attribute picklist

Use Case: A user may inadvertently assign a value to an attribute (which is custom linked to a picklist) for an incorrect item. In such cases, the user needs the flexibility to remove the value from the attribute for that specific item.

Rationale: The ability to assign an empty or null value to an attribute, including those driven by picklists, is crucial. This gap in functionality was unintentionally revealed during an API call test. Nevertheless, the necessity for this feature is substantial for effective data management within the system. This feature should be made available through both the user interface and API calls.

Hi Sam,

product and development team reviewed your request, and we want to suggest the following implementation:

• For web UI:
  • Add an empty value by default as a first value on a dropdown picker for Shape/Material/Finish/Heat treat, and other custom attributes defined through a picklist. Once the empty value is selected and save command is used, item attributes defined through a picklist will be invalidated.
• Allow passing an empty string or null to the API methods exposed on the following endpoints:
  • PATCH /api/bom_import/v1/part_version
  • PATCH /api/bom_import/v1/part_version/structure
  • POST /api/bom_import/v1/part_version/upsert_structure

Do you have any concerns with a suggested approach? Similar implementation is already available on the CAD plugin UI, where item attributes defined through a picklist can already be invalidated.
