So imagine you are a product manager for a range of products. The products can be divided into two segments and for each segment, you have multiple products.
Each segment is organised as a project with one end item as per product in the same project. As product manager you can then easily get an overview on open issues for the two segments separately, or if you move one level up, both of them at the same time at the same dashboard.
Other ways to use this is that each product is organises as a separate project with one overlying project that allows you to look at the product family as one. Can be very convenient if one e.g. has one person responsible for each of the products, but one product manager that governs the full family.
