Tandem Tuesday Tip - When Creating a Custom Classification System.....

Classification Systems are the foundation of the asset data for a Digital Twin in Tandem, which is why having the flexibility of creating a custom classification system is so valuable to users. Be sure to check out Creating a Custom Classification and Working with Custom Classifications to take advantage of all the asset data collected in the models during design and construction.

Some key tips for your Tip Tuesday we wanted to highlight when creating a Custom Classification System:

  • Classification codes need to be unique, as they are the bases for what asset data is associated to elements and how that gets stored in the model database. Having duplicate classification codes will cause errors, and the file won’t upload/update.
  • Codes need to be inherently hierarchical. Each child needs to start with an exact match of the prefix of their parents, and no sibling can be a prefix to another sibling at the same level in the hierarchy. See the picture below that illustrates this.

  • Only files with the .xlsx extension will upload to Tandem
  • The asset code, when using letters, is case sensitive
  • There is now a search function in the title bar using an industry classification. This is helpful when users want to check whether or not the asset/system exists.

  • When uploading any custom classification, Tandem provides a validation that checks for duplicate codes, that the code structure is hierarchical, and that the levels are correct.

Attached for reference is an example Custom Classification Template with notes explaining Excel formatting and an example of a broken classification system.
