API/Integrating
- How integrated is the Tandem team with Reality Capture asset classification? Most of our projects are brownfield and won't see updated models for existing assets in the scope of work. Being able to cost-effectively twin the rest of their site will be critical for our clients’ adoption.
We do have a workflow through Reality Capture for classifying assets, turning them into a segmented mesh, and then bringing that into Tandem through our Navisworks workflow today. From that, the classification comes across. You can do that, and then augment the asset data, parameter data, IoT telemetry, and everything else you want to do with Tandem.
As the Recap team continues that journey, that capability of taking reality capture data and turning it into mesh-based model data is getting richer and richer, and better and better in its capability set. That’s definitely a way of taking a brownfield facility and pretty quickly standing up a digital twin.
Today, it’s going through Recap Pro and then pulling in an NWC file or an NWD. Just recently, the Autodesk Viewer team shared that we can now, in our viewer, import the Recap file directly, and that’s happening elsewhere in Autodesk. It’s certainly something we should incorporate in the near future, but the opportunity will be to go straight from Recap into Tandem without going through Navisworks export. - Are you thinking, or is there already something developed for connecting CCTV systems and access control systems to Tandem?
We're thinking of it. It’s further out on our roadmap. We’ve heard some feedback, but not a ton. I could see this growing as a use case.
To some degree, you can. You just need the camera asset modeled in Tandem and then link it to the CCTV feed. It’s not a perfect workflow, we want something more integrated long-term, but some customers have experimented with it already.
General Product Info
- We're a large GC, so we don't need the facility integrations and monitoring in the full version of Tandem. However, we do need facility-level permissions as we obviously work with multiple clients, but can't give them access to all our projects.
There was a safe harbor at the beginning of this, but I think you’ll see some changes to the addition of Tandem that is in the Model Management Bundle and in BIM Collaborate Pro at the beginning of next year, and we have no specific timeframe. That should give some broader capabilities around not just permission management parallel to Tandem but also unlocking the APIs and some more of the streaming data capabilities, so it’s going to give you a better kind of path on board to broader Tandem capabilities.
I thought about including a top feature request section in our look back as well, and I will say, without a doubt in my mind, I don’t know exactly where it falls, but more granular permissions in Tandem is one of those top features. Our Experience Design Research team has gathered some information at AU this year and beyond. So, certainly sign up for the Insider Lounge, and you can help us shape what that capability looks like over the course of this next year. - Can this potentially replace Archibus?
No. In both the project and owner ecosystem, there are many different systems and sources of truth. Revit and other design tools are a source of truth, and construction documentation is a source of truth, etc. For an owner, their CMMS, IWMS, IoT, and BMS systems are each a source of truth for different data types. What we need is a hub to integrate and connect all these sources of truth. Simply put, we see Autodesk Tandem as the hub that connects to various federated systems.

Setting up projects correctly is crucial from the beginning to save time. If clients decide to use Tandem, can I set parameters in Revit so the information populates in Tandem?
We would recommend reviewing the Specify section of our Help content on how data is structured in Tandem.
Other
- Tandem has a transfer ownership tool. Will Docs get the same? For some of our clients, alterations may be made in-house. For the digital twin to be up-to-date, an update to the design files must be made.
Docs has something similar. Docs has the Bridge capability, which customers are using today, so we’ve had Professional Engineering Consultants (PEC)on the webinar before, for example, but we have large capital owners, too, that have Docs accounts, and they use Bridge to basically both manage multiple ongoing capital projects and then merge all of that data into their single central repository of their current as-built state. So, the Bridge functionality is kind of analogous to the facility transfer capability, and if you haven’t tried it, I definitely recommend it.
As part of that expansion into 1D and 2D twin capabilities, the product team has been working with our Autodesk Docs team to look at how we can have a deeper integration there or more holistically incorporate that file structure within the digital twin experience. Today, it is a link out and points to your document environment.
- Typically, how long does it take to fully import the site data and calibrate/CX the data points being monitored for a 150k square foot facility, or 6–8k points?
This depends greatly on the size of the project and the facility. - Have you worked with any customers (no need to name) with water treatment plants? If so, how did it honestly go?
Generally, if we look at our customer base and the segmentation of people implementing Tandem, the strongest fit is with mission-critical asset types. That includes manufacturers (industrial and discrete), data centers, airports, healthcare facilities like hospitals, and water treatment plants. We also see a lot of corporate real estate clients, university campuses, or corporate campuses, where optimizing assets and utilization is important, limiting downtime, and addressing challenges of an aging workforce.
From our exposure, adoption in water and wastewater facilities has often been driven by engineering firms providing services there. They show the value, prove ROI, and then it moves into operations. In other cases, the operator sets requirements for efficient operations and pushes delivery teams to meet them. In some cases, building and operations happen together, where data is created and used right away.

Roadmap
- Being an owner/operator company, I see this technology being huge in our industry. Currently, we have the ability to link our Vault Professional-hosted information to our ACC account, providing efficiencies in knowing our data is synced and up-to-date. Do you see this capability ever coming to Tandem, where we could be able to link our Vault to Tandem directly?
Integrations with other Autodesk products are determined by customer demand and feedback.
Tandem Connect
- Is the simulated data for any type of IoTs available in any facility?
The simulation pipeline in the library supports numeric values across a range of sample stream types. It can be modified so that the parameters and number ranges can be like something you have in the real world.
Ticketing
- Is Tandem a CMMS? Where does the work order come from, Tandem, or can it inbound, or just outbound?
Tandem is not a work order system of record. We are not a CMMS. That said, we do see an opportunity to normalize work order data and also generate work orders. Seeing an anomaly or something, in time series data and generating an inspection work order before a failure is a big part of what will come out in our work order capability.
Another important thing is normalizing work order data across a portfolio, different geographies may use different CMMS systems. Tandem becomes the platform for normalizing and analyzing that data. - When will the work orders features be available?
As you saw in previous webinars, this is currently in development. To stay up-to-date on all things Tandem: - Do operators actuate valves etc. in Tandem, or is it a data system only?
Direct answer is yes. The ability that Bob just described in triggering the creation of a work order is not really that different from controlling a system or an asset. However, from a security and operational standpoint, those systems are more tightly controlled. So, we’ve holistically been focused on read-only in that space, consuming the time-series data, but not writing back to it.
What you’ll see us do first is start to make recommendations. As you start to trust those recommendations, certain types may be automated in the future, but we won’t blindly modify control systems. That would be bad.
And to drive the point clearly, the actuating factor for us is the Tandem webhook we mentioned earlier. It’s a powerful utility introduced this past year.
