When I open the application on my desktop, it says I have to log in to use it. But when I go to do so, it says I have no internet connection (even though I do) and won't let me do anything but close it. I've tried uninstalling and redownloading and using a different wifi connection, but no luck.

If you are on Windows 8, at some point you need to upgrade to 8.1 at some point. SketchBook (8.6) is using the latest web code from IE 11 to display the page.
You can try this older verison for now. No need to buy it, you just need to 'login'.
