iOS 11 with SketchBook Pro 2.x (S logo) & SketchBookX

1. Please do NOT upgrade to iOS 11 until you have backed up all your sketches.

https://www.sketchbook.com/help/knowledge-base/transfer-legacy-data-files/

iOS 11 is a 64-bit ONLY operating system that runs on A7 processors or higher. This means that if you upgrade to iOS 11, you won't be able to run SketchBook Pro (S logo) or SketchBook Express (SketchBookX) and your files will be lost.

http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-ios-11-32-bit-apps-compatibility-2017-8

2. Here are two solutions for now:

a. Stay on iOS 10.x (you can still use the app(s) and access your files)

b. Upgrade to a newer version of SketchBook (before doing this, please backup our files)

3. Files on iCloud (2.x)

a. Download the latest version of Desktop app (mac or win)
b. Open the files from iCloud and Save As (rename the files) - Save As Tiff
c. Run the latest mobile version (v4.x) and you are able to open the files again.

4. Upgrade info:

  • SketchBook Pro 2.x to SketchBook 3.x is a paid update
  • SketchBook Pro 2.x to SketchBook 4.x is a paid update
  • SketchBook 3.x to SketchBook 4.x is a free update

5. SketchBookX Users:

The free version of SketchBook (iOS/Android) has a similar feature set as SketchBookX.

6. Revert back to iOS 10 Solution

If you have backed up your device before upgrading to iOS 11, you may try to revert back by following the steps here:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204184

7. Contact Support

https://support.sketchbook.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=149598

8. Update on 02-08-2018 07:42 AM via David Lau/Jochen S

To get your Sketches in SketchBook Pro (S logo) 2.9 back:

a. Do NOT delete your SketchBook Pro (S logo) from your iPad.  If you delete the app, you will delete ALL your sketches on the iPad.

b. Connect iPad to a desktop computer and back your iPad to the desktop computer.

c.  Use iExplorer to navigate the backup.

https://macroplant.com/iexplorer/tutorials/how-to-browse-backups-on-iphone

d.  There are png files that is a preview of your sketch in the SketchBook folder.

e. There are .data files.  This can be opened with GIMP.

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/31868307/open-data-files-as-greyscale-images-in-gimp

This file structure I get from iExplorer when extracting the sketchbook data from my iPad backup is noted below:

Hi Kathryn,

did you already delete the SketchBookPro App?

Then all data is deleted too and your only chance

is to dig up an old backup before you deleted

SketchBookPro.

@Anonymous

If you have deleted SketchBook Pro from the iPad and you do a backup to your desktop computer, the sketches will be deleted because the App is gone.

Hello kholt,

which program are you using to access your backup?

You wrote "iBackup". There is an iBackup viewer from

http://www.imactools.com which works for me too.

There are other programs that are also called iBackup

(e.g. from http://www.grapefruit.ch/iBackup/index.html or

https://itunes.apple.com/de/app/ibackup/id417384018?mt=8)

which serve different purposes and will not work.

Kind regards

  Jochen

I was using the one you recommended. Not the grapefruit one.

I crosschecked with different iTunes Backups (iPhone with iOS9, iPad with iOS10 and iOS11) and the files are always there.

To circumvent a simple misunderstanding I uploaded a small screencast how to find the files in iExplorer.

Kind regards

Jochen

URGENT HELP SKETCHBOOK PRO DOES NOT WORK

I have the same problem as everyone else. I just upgraded to ios 11 and realized my Sketchbook Pro on my iPad does not work.  Worse yet is that I cannot access all my sketches.  I am an artist and I had been working for weeks on sketches that I was supposed to paint now. I lost like work worth about 10.000 USD. And I was suppose to paint know - I do have a big exhibition coming up in the end of April!!

There must be someway to get the sketches back, and back today, pls.

I mean I payed for this app and I did not get any warnings.

Pls help me fix this today.

/Anneli

Dear Anneli,

did you read my post from 02-11-2018?
With the free tools iExplore and GIMP it should be possible to recover your sketches in PSD format and then reimport them back into a current SketchBook version.

With kind regards

  Jochen

I have tried these iexplore options. There’s nothing in the SBpro area. See attached photo. I did not delete the app. I have been WAITING PATIENTLY for a freaking FIX to this problem. At this point I would just like ANY version of what I had been working on before ios11. ANYTHING.

Dear balloum,

did you really follow the steps given in the video I posted on 02-25-2018?

Your screenshot looks like you are browsing the app files of a connected

device like you would do with iTunes also. You won't find anything there.

You should really try to use a backup of your device and go the way using

the Backup Explorer option in iExplore. This way more files are accessible.

Good luck

  Jochen

Ok, I got it coordinated. I had my backups encrypted somehow and needed to turn that off to do a backup I could actually browse. Thanks for your help! iExplorer works!

Nothing to tell me before hand that there would be any issue with updating my iPad. I back up to the iCloud, but I updated to fix another app.

So are all my items lost? I still have the app but won’t open and I can’t revert or loose another app data.

Why wasn’t there an alert or notification to app users?

How do I get the software I paid for back?

Help appreciated. Thanks

@Anonymous

On the 4th page of this message board and the 5th, we have included a solution to get your sketches back.  It is possible and it is quite technical.

a. iOS 10 had warnings about 32 bit apps.

b. SketchBook with an S logo is a 32 bit app.

c. SketchBook (new version) is now free but it requires a login (which you have) because you posted in this forum post.

Hi, I did the procedure using IExplorer and could save the .png and .data files on my mac. But how can I import them back to the new version of sketchbook on my iPad??

Thanks for a fast reply.

I am also very disappointed by Autodesk to leave us Sketchbook Pro customers who have paid for this software alone with than problem by not serving an easy solution.

a, Use Gimp to convert .data files to .psd

b. Put .PSD files to iCloud and use SketchBook to imporr/open files from iCloud.

https://www.sketchbook.com/help/knowledge-base/use-icloud/

You can leave files in .psd format and open on desktop version of SketchBook because it's now free (login via email).

OK, you mean I have to open EVERY SINGLE FILE in GIMP convert it and then save and upload it ???

How about, that Autodesk provides a converter?
