iOS 11 with SketchBook Pro 2.x (S logo) & SketchBookX

1. Please do NOT upgrade to iOS 11 until you have backed up all your sketches.

https://www.sketchbook.com/help/knowledge-base/transfer-legacy-data-files/

iOS 11 is a 64-bit ONLY operating system that runs on A7 processors or higher. This means that if you upgrade to iOS 11, you won't be able to run SketchBook Pro (S logo) or SketchBook Express (SketchBookX) and your files will be lost.

http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-ios-11-32-bit-apps-compatibility-2017-8

2. Here are two solutions for now:

a. Stay on iOS 10.x (you can still use the app(s) and access your files)

b. Upgrade to a newer version of SketchBook (before doing this, please backup our files)

3. Files on iCloud (2.x)

a. Download the latest version of Desktop app (mac or win)
b. Open the files from iCloud and Save As (rename the files) - Save As Tiff
c. Run the latest mobile version (v4.x) and you are able to open the files again.

4. Upgrade info:

  • SketchBook Pro 2.x to SketchBook 3.x is a paid update
  • SketchBook Pro 2.x to SketchBook 4.x is a paid update
  • SketchBook 3.x to SketchBook 4.x is a free update

5. SketchBookX Users:

The free version of SketchBook (iOS/Android) has a similar feature set as SketchBookX.

6. Revert back to iOS 10 Solution

If you have backed up your device before upgrading to iOS 11, you may try to revert back by following the steps here:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204184

7. Contact Support

8. Update on 02-08-2018 07:42 AM via David Lau/Jochen S

To get your Sketches in SketchBook Pro (S logo) 2.9 back:

a. Do NOT delete your SketchBook Pro (S logo) from your iPad.  If you delete the app, you will delete ALL your sketches on the iPad.

b. Connect iPad to a desktop computer and back your iPad to the desktop computer.

c.  Use iExplorer to navigate the backup.

https://macroplant.com/iexplorer/tutorials/how-to-browse-backups-on-iphone

d.  There are png files that is a preview of your sketch in the SketchBook folder.

e. There are .data files.  This can be opened with GIMP.

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/31868307/open-data-files-as-greyscale-images-in-gimp

This file structure I get from iExplorer when extracting the sketchbook data from my iPad backup is noted below:

If you are on iOS 11, it will not run.  You can download the latest version of SketchBook via iTunes and it will run.  SketchBookX features are the similar to the free version of SketchBook.

If you delete SketchBookX, you will lose your sketches.  The only way to get back sketches is to revert back to iOS 10 via a "Backup" that you have done on your desktop computer as noted in this article:

We were running Sketchbook Pro on an iPad Pro. We did not backup before upgrading to IOS11. We do have a full backup of the iPad, but it was made after we installed IOS11.

Is there a way to retrieve our images and use them with some other version of Sketchbook?

Thanks.

Apple has stopped signing iOS 10.3.3, so reverting an iPad to iOS 10 is not possible anymore:

https://9to5mac.com/2017/10/04/downgrade-from-ios-11-back-to-ios-10/

Using an app that can extract files from backups could be a solution:

I find this whole situation pretty poor. I can’t believe I can no longer use an app I paid good money for but you are happy to charge me $30 a year for a subscription. Not only I can not use the app, I not even access my drawings and worse still they are just “gone”?! Seriously?! Really poor show.

I am in the same boat since updating ipad to IOS 11. I love Sketchbook pro and am very disappointed that I can no longer use it. I cannot be expected not to upgrade my ipad! Autodesk needs to find a better solution for those of who have paid good money. I love the ease of using it.

I'm sorry, David, but I did not receive your PM. Is there someway I can give you an alternative email address. I don't mind posting that address publicly, but would doing so violate the rules of this forum>

Thanks

David i have a question for you. Why wasn't Autodesk users warned by email to not update to iOS 11 before backing up your artwork. I just find it very frustrating and I'm sure a lot of other members too. Especially those who had paid for the app and for the upgraded brushes. Another bad part is Apple already stopped users from downgrading to iOS 10. Autodesk is only pushing users to Procreate app, cause their fine on the new iOS 11. Now, I'm not saying its your fault and your just the messenger. But it has to be some kind of solution. When you get a chance please PM me or even better reply back to forum. Thank you for your time. And i wish everyone the best luck on recovering their artwork.

I upgraded to ios11 , I didn't back anything up. I was using sketchbook express.

If I install the newest version of sketchbook, will It give me access to all my unsaved sketches.....or, has years and years of sketching been lost forever.

Hi David.

My customer would like to know weather SketchBook Pro will be available on iOS11 in the future or not.

If yes, when it will be?

It would be great if you could reply me ASAP.

Thanks

Maho

@maho   SketchBook Pro 2.x (S logo) will not be updated to 64 bit. At this time, we have SketchBook 3.x (Pencil Logo) that is compatible but as noted in this post, if you don't save yoru sketches to the iCloud, they will be gone.

Hi David

Is there any reason that you are not going to update the sketchbook?

SketchBook Pro (S logo) = 2.x  > Last update was done in October 2014.

The S logo became the Pencil Logo.....

SketchBook (Pencil Logo) = 3.x  > Released in October 2015.

SketchBook (Pencil Logo) = 4.x > Released on May 2017

https://www.sketchbook.com/blog/sketchbook-4-0-for-ios/

For iPads running 32 bit, it will download 3.x.  For iPads 64 bit, it will download 4.x of 3.x or 4.x.  The upgrade path is to go from 2.x to 3.x or 4.x.  If you are running 2.x, it will not run anymore and you may lose your sketches.

I tried option (3) to upload them to the cloud (iCloud I assume.)

How do I access iCloud from the desktop App (on Mac?) I don't see anything in the iCloud folder.

Would a TIFF contain the layers? That's important to me.

I just upgraded to ios 11 and realized my Sketchbook Pro and Sketchbook Express are no longer working.  Worse yet is that I cannot access all my drawings.  So not only did a product I paid became completely useless, but all my drawings that I spent a lot of hard work on are gone.

I did do a backup before the upgrade, but I believe I can no longer revert back to ios 10.3.3 to access that backup because Apple has stopped signing the ios 10.3.3 file.

Is there any recourse please??

@rshouker

1. It sounds like the iPad and the Mac are not signed with the same Apple ID.

Open the Settings app on the iPad, tap the first entry in the column on the left and see the ID you are signed in with.

Then go to System Preferences on the Mac > iCloud and if it's not the same ID, click the 'Sign Out' button, then sign in with the same ID like on the iPad.

2. The TIFF files are not layered. Saving as PSD will keep the layers.
