iOS 11 with SketchBook Pro 2.x (S logo) & SketchBookX

1. Please do NOT upgrade to iOS 11 until you have backed up all your sketches.

https://www.sketchbook.com/help/knowledge-base/transfer-legacy-data-files/

iOS 11 is a 64-bit ONLY operating system that runs on A7 processors or higher. This means that if you upgrade to iOS 11, you won't be able to run SketchBook Pro (S logo) or SketchBook Express (SketchBookX) and your files will be lost.

http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-ios-11-32-bit-apps-compatibility-2017-8

2. Here are two solutions for now:

a. Stay on iOS 10.x (you can still use the app(s) and access your files)

b. Upgrade to a newer version of SketchBook (before doing this, please backup our files)

3. Files on iCloud (2.x)

a. Download the latest version of Desktop app (mac or win)
b. Open the files from iCloud and Save As (rename the files) - Save As Tiff
c. Run the latest mobile version (v4.x) and you are able to open the files again.

4. Upgrade info:

  • SketchBook Pro 2.x to SketchBook 3.x is a paid update
  • SketchBook Pro 2.x to SketchBook 4.x is a paid update
  • SketchBook 3.x to SketchBook 4.x is a free update

5. SketchBookX Users:

The free version of SketchBook (iOS/Android) has a similar feature set as SketchBookX.

6. Revert back to iOS 10 Solution

If you have backed up your device before upgrading to iOS 11, you may try to revert back by following the steps here:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204184

7. Contact Support

8. Update on 02-08-2018 07:42 AM via David Lau/Jochen S

To get your Sketches in SketchBook Pro (S logo) 2.9 back:

a. Do NOT delete your SketchBook Pro (S logo) from your iPad.  If you delete the app, you will delete ALL your sketches on the iPad.

b. Connect iPad to a desktop computer and back your iPad to the desktop computer.

c.  Use iExplorer to navigate the backup.

https://macroplant.com/iexplorer/tutorials/how-to-browse-backups-on-iphone

d.  There are png files that is a preview of your sketch in the SketchBook folder.

e. There are .data files.  This can be opened with GIMP.

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/31868307/open-data-files-as-greyscale-images-in-gimp

This file structure I get from iExplorer when extracting the sketchbook data from my iPad backup is noted below:

If you made a backup, the current version of SketchBook can open them if it's in Pro mode. So if they were saved in iCloud, Dropbox, etc, tap the + button in the Gallery > New from Image > Browse and you should now be able to access the files inside iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive with the Files app.

Unfortunately when I said I made a backup before upgrading to ios 11, I meant a device backup, not backups of the individual drawings I did in Sketchbook Pro and Express.  I tried to revert my device back to ios 10.3.3 in order to access that iPad device backup and save all my Sketchbook drawings, but I was unsuccessful in doing that since Apple stopped signing 10.3.3.

Also, when you say the drawings are accessible in Pro mode, do you mean the subscription, or do you mean the $4.99 Pro Tool?  Again, I don't have access to the individual files for most of my drawings.  I do have a few backed up more than a year back, so are those importable to the current version of Sketchbook app (with pencil logo)?  I don't see a ready way to do that, but then I don't have subscription version.  Would the $4.99 Pro Tool allow me to do that?

Indeed, Apple stopped signing iOS 10 so you can't revert to it. But if you made a device backup, you can try the iExplorer app to extract files from such backups:

I am very dissapointed. I paid for the pro version on my ipad. I was using it even in my new ipad pro. But now, After ios 11, besides loosing all my sketches, I am forced to pay for the pro tools again? Not fair. Does it means that I have to stay with my old ipad and not having the right of upgrade to be able to use the app that I already paid for???

Not fair at all... Very dissapointed. Did not expect this from Autodesk. Loyalty of customers means nothing...

Hello!

My father is an artist, he comes from a generation that doesn't find it easy to work with technologies, but has learnt to use Sketchbook and has used it for years now. He has created beautiful artworks on his iPad. Today he updated on iOS 11 not knowing about this issue. Can I ask you, is there any chance that we will somehow get to his work again? It would be a terrible terrible loss for his work if he couldn't recover it back.

Please help!!

Yours faithfully

Ema

you could have told users before the Apple upgrade.

Saying our files are "gone " is a bit short.

For me and probably others it is  a big damage.

Is there any way from your side to retrieve those files ?

If the .SBP files were also saved inside the iCloud folder, these can be opened with the desktop version of SketchBook Pro: www.sketchbook.com/thankyou/ and saved as PSD back in a folder in iCloud Drive (or DropBox, Drive, OneDrive, Box).

Then these PSD files can be opened in the Pro version of the current SketchBook app for iPad by going to the Gallery > + button > New from Image > Browse > iCloud Drive > (folder with the PSD files).

Also: when connecting the iPad to a desktop computer, iTunes starts and makes a backup of the iPad. In this case you can try the iExplorer app to extract files from the SketchBook.app bundle inside the last iTunes backup:

IT WOULD APPEAR THAT YOU SIR HAVE NOT ANSWERED THE QUESTION-AS TO WHY A 64 BIT CONVERSION IS NOT APPLICABLE OR DOES YOUR APP SOFTWARE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT REFUSE TO COMPLY WITH IOS 11.0? AND WHY ARE CONSUMERS EXPERIENCING WAKAMO ON YOUR WEBSITE? I THINK IT WOULD BE INCUMBENT UPON YOUR ENGINEERING TEAM TO SHOW A LITTLE MORE CLASS! THESE ARE THE RULES-AND YOU HAVE SEEM TO ADOPTED A LAISSEZ FAIRE HANDS OFF POLICY. UPDATE THE APP-IT IS SIMPLE-OR DON'T PUT YOUR APPS ON APPLE'S PLAYING FIELD!

I REALLY DON'T THINK HE WOULD HAVE A DIGNIFIED RESPONSE TO A VERY GOOD QUESTION LIKE YOURS. IT It would appear that the engineering team for autodesk inc would rather blame apple than comply with the 64 bit modification. It is very simple to do-but our friend here seems to want to play "CASUAL DISMISSAL" -he does not want to accept his or their responsibility for missing the update compatibility configurations. Instead he glosses over the whole (3rd Party Developers Contractual agreements) as written by Apple that his and other 3rd party developers have failed to comply with. The answer to your question is simple, Yes your dad's art is important to him-But is not important to our dismal friend! Now our friend had over 6 months or more to adapt-and to make their customers whole-and to restore the app to it's appropriate 64 bit -or to compensate in another way for the loss of your dad's intellectual property rights. As Attitude is more important than facts, circumstances, the past, or failures, everyday we have a choice as to what kind of attitude we will embrace-But our friend here seems to forget that Attitude can make or break a Company, Church Or Home-life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react-So our Dismal friend seems to be complicit with his talking points that does not resolve your  concerns!

Most folks were not aware that Autodesk Inc would be so careless-and so they were not warned of their failure to keep up with Apple's IOS 11- But Apple gave them and other 3rd party developers plenty of time to modify their software apps ( SOLD ON THE APP STORE ) -and now they seem to be complicit with not honoring their customers with refunds or a resolution to the app not opening-and they also failed to not fix many of the problems associated with their APP as it pertained to IOS 10 And under. How many years did they fail to recognize the problems "Sketchbook Pro May Slow down your iPad Or iPhone" -and now they are acting as if this update just came out of NO-WHERE! Yes if i knew then what i know now i would never expect this developer to be so lazy and irresponsible as they have shown to be. And The app itself NEEDS TO BE UPDATED IN IT'S ORIGINAL FORMAT-AND THOSE GLITCHES SHOULD HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED BY THESE COGNITIVE MISERS ALONG TIME AGO! And to think this an attractive way to do business-( I THINK NOT )! I always thought attraction was better than Promotion! But in this case i think Apple should ( KICK THEM OFF THE PLAYING FIELD-UNSPORTSMAN LIKE CONDUCT ) failure to keep up!

Trying so hard to follow this string of possible solutions for dissappointed Pro user who were ambushed by this fiasco.  What do you mean by pro mode?  I have pro files on iCloud, but I cannot see them in SketchBook 4.2.

SketchBook for desktop (Mac & PC: www.sketchbook.com/thankyou/) in Pro mode (or free trial mode) can open the old files and save them as layered PSDs ('File' menu > Save As...).

I, too, am upset by the irresponsbility of this fiasco. I tried to contact you through all social medias, private message and public. Not a word from you. How in the world were users supposed to know about this issue before IOS 11? You job is not to fix this going forward, your job  now is to fix this problem and update Sketchbook Pro, but obviously it seems too late.

You need to re-think your vision. You need to realize that your customers’ “content” is the most important aspect of what you offer, not your product. Clearly you should have realized the risk involved, so you SHOULD have continued updates for ALL your products so that you supported your customers, instead, you ignored their interest.

Thank you for the loss of all my drawings.

I’m a full time artist doing much of my work on my iPad and I’m very upset that we received no warning about iOS 11 and Sketchbook Pro incompatibility. While I have saved much of my work in Sketchbook Pro, they are saved as jpegs and I can’t continue to work on them. I have purchased Sketchbook in addition, so it wouldn’t  have been too much trouble to send me a notice so that I could have saved them in a better format. Can’t Autodesk upgrade it at least long enough for long time users to retrieve their images? This is a big disservice to your customers.

David,

Thank you for the great resources. The move to 64 bit has caused our school to depart from some much beloved apps. I see that https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/autodesk-sketchbook/id883738213?mt=8 is available but since it offers in App purchases we are not able to move to that app. While I understand that Autodesk is not required to support apps that they give away, I do wonder if there will be a special education version of Sketchbook that will not require the in app purchase or an Autodesk account/subscription. Some of our students are under 13 so that is also an issue. Any help woud be appreciated.

I have an idea. Update Sketchbook x so we can get our drawings. Easy solution that you owe to your customers. My question is why don’t you do that? Thank you.
