I've been trying to figure this out for a while. When you turn off your background and see the white and gray checkers, that means its background is transparent. But when i export the image with the background layer off, the saved image's background is either a dark gray or black. I also noticed I can't put it into any other programs (even Microsoft word or Google Docs which usually does fine with images with no background) is there a way to save my image with the transparent background and that could be put into other programs? This is very important to me and I am confused.

The PNG and JPEG are the same image. note: JPEG went completely black while PNG went white. Neither have the gray and white checkers.
The PNG file type should work. If you want to test it before putting the PNG in a doc, re-import the PNG into your sketchbook file, turn the background layer back on then change the background color to something other than white to see if it worked. I've also attached some example steps (on this post and the next) of making an image transparent then importing it into a document.
