bridge with a hinge in the middle

hello,

I have gonna throught all the relevant topics on the hinge and unfortunately some have been mislead.  like if you want to creat a hinge in the middle of a bridge to reduce the centre bending moment, the factor you need to apply is "release" rather than "non-linear hinge". you should click release the z direction(or whatever coordinate system in your model) rotation "Rz" to apply this hinge.

Bar releases are always set in local coordinate system.
Normally it will be rotation Ry release you have to assign to get no vertical moments at any bar end

hi,

thanks for your notice.

it is the case in a 2 d problem with only x-y, but in a 3-d problem, it would become release Rz in vertical direction.

also, I found release in Rz only available to bars, with respect to shell/panel problem(sometime panel is more convenient to simulate the bridge deck actually), there is only Rx available in the "linear release" section which apply to panel.  this would be a problem if I want to release Rz.

You need to understand that ,as I said before , bar releases are defined based on the local coordinate system of the bar , which almost always is not coincident with the global coordinate system.
